The Ramifications of Divorce on Women’s Class

Divorce is an extremely commonly heard of thing in the world today, but one thing associated with divorce that is not as commonly know about is what happens after a divorce. What happens to the women that are now left without another individual to rely on for financial support? Does her social status change at all when this occurs, or do the affects have no real impact on her? How many women have to deal with dramatic decreases in finances due to divorce? How common is it for he women to become poor after a divorce? Do most of the women get back on their feet or do most falter? Answers to these questions and many more will be discussed in further detail in this paper, but first lets start on a more personal note.

Being raised with a divorced parent myself, I know what a woman goes through when she has just gotten a divorce. Growing up, my family was never well off when it came to money, living in trailer parks was quite familiar to me, so when my mother got a divorced from my father, the financial downfall that she suffered didn’t hit me as hard as it would have, say if I was middle class. We did, however, have to watch what we spent money on and I didn’t get all the little unnecessary things that I would have if my mom and dad were still together. Our situation was a unique one though, that is for sure. My mom fell victim to a man that refused to pay any child support what-so-ever and so when it came to those monthly checks that my friend with divorced parents got in the mail, I received nothing. This most definitely placed a damper on my mom and how she supported both of us. She had a poor paying job with semi-decent benefits but not nearly enough to feel secure. She busted her butt on a day to day basis and rarely saw the rewards. This, I am most certain, was one of the hardest times that my mother had to go through, and to think she wouldn’t have had to deal with such circumstances if she had had that “support” that she needed to stay afloat.

As the years passed after my mom and dad got divorced, my mother slowly build up her income. We finally had spending money, although not that much, and our nightly diet changed with everyday of the week. My mom still did not receive child support and yet that did not stop her, she pushed through tough hours at her job and made it work. All my moms work eventually paid off and she was offered a job in a new town where she would get paid more. With the way that things had been going since the divorce, she was more than willing to take the job, as would most women in that kind of situation. For seven years she has worked for the same insurance company and has increased her yearly income dramatically. I don’t know what I would do today if I had to live the way we did when I was younger. My mom is proof that even though a woman can decrease in class and deal with hard times, due to divorce, that doesn’t mean that she can’t come through it successful.

Research shows that four out of every ten marriages ends in divorce and in most of these cases the women looses financially and is seen as the gateway to poverty for most Americans, especially those with children. In the first year after the divorce, a woman’s standard of living declines 5-45% where as the males raises 10 % (The Good Enough Family). This is most likely due to the sudden financial independence that the woman has to deal with and the man now has financial freedom, increasing his standard of living. Because of this decrease the women usually has to move to a less costly residency, cutting back typical expenditures and in cases where children are involved, schools have to be changed. Women also spend less time then men do when it comes to managing financial resources, another cause of financial decline.

Research also shows that 8% of single parent families are headed by women, most of which are likely to be poor and inn 16 one third of families headed by a single woman were in poverty (McKenzie, ). It is also said that many educated and financially secure women become “undone” by the failure of a marriage (Hetherington, 70). This, however, contradicts the study done by Hope that said that % of modern women say that financial independence is vital to them. If this is the case then why is it that most women leave their marriages with few professional skills and little work experience?
