Summary


From the first forty-eight pages of this book one can tell that it is about a boy named Sean. Sean is a very unique boy in both good and bad ways. His home life is horrible. His parents are divorced and he hasn’t seen his father in two years and is beaten by his mother. She sleeps during the day and then goes elsewhere at night spending no time with Sean. Because of these conditions, Sean is a troublemaker. He gets suspended, into fight, and has a police record. But when he gets sent to a ranch for community service, his life would change.


The story starts out in Sean’s English class when a class discussion on heroes in taking place and Sean is forced to contribute by Mrs. Walker, his English teacher. He says a quality of a hero is bravery. At the cafeteria Sean hears that Rick, his x-friend, is going to beat him up. At a moment’s notice after hearing this news, Sean goes to Rick to pick a fight. They start fighting and are finally sent to the vice principal, Mr. Bushel. There they get a five-day suspension, three out of school suspensions, and two in-school suspensions. Sean’s father is forced to come in to discuss Sean’s conduct. It was the first time Sean had seen his father in two years. His father says he can’t offer much help and leaves and Sean, ignoring the vice principal’s orders to sit down, leaves the school to start his suspension.





After his suspension, Sean goes home. He then comes back to the school and waited for the other kids to get out. When Mike came out, him and Sean hooked up with some girls and headed to a party. There, people crowded him asking about Rick and irritating Sean a lot. After he had had enough, Sean left with Mike right before the cops got there. But, on the way back, they were caught after curfew by a cop. Sean and Mike gave him a run and policeman went after Sean and caught him. It wasn’t the first time he had visited the police station.


A judge declared that Sean had to do a certain amount of community service. After receiving his punishment, Sean’s mother took picked him up and beat him at home. The next day Sean was taken to the Carbondale Ranch where he was instructed to shovel manure by Mr. Hassler. Sean gets to see some horses and have lunch at the ranch. Sean finds out that Mr. Hassler is a World War veteran. Sean and Mr. Hassler converse a bit. It would be a beginning.


Mr. Hassler is informed that a horse name Manda is having an early delivery. Sean had to help with the delivery by holding Manda’s head while Mr. Hassler helped with the delivery at the other end. The doctor couldn’t come so Sean was there to help the whole way through. As the baby horse was born, he was immediately taken away to another stall. Manda tried to get the foal but instead left a wound on Mr. Hassler. Sean was forced to wipe the blood off the foal unwillingly.


Sean finds out that Manda was a horse that killed her foals. She had a good bloodline so they continued letting her have babies. After eating dinner, Mr. Hassler told Sean to think up a name for the foal and leaves Sean in mystery when he says that the foal is imprinted to him. The next day, when Mr. Hassler asks Sean for a name, Sean says “Knicker” when he looks at the foal’s front legs and sees that they are white near the bottom and look like knickers. Sean also finds out that when an animal is imprinted to a being, it looks upon the first being it sees as its parent.


When Sean gets home, his mother beats him. She hit him in the head and his head slammed into a nail in the wall. He passed out. When he became conscious, he walked to school and from there jogged to the ranch. Sean falls asleep next to Knicker. In the morning he is found sleeping next to Knicker asleep. He awakens and passes out again and this time wakes up in a room unknown to him. This is where the first part of the book ends.
