News media is a very controversial form of free speech. While it is intended to be a fair, unbiased reporting of events, biases often creep into the final product. Biases must constantly be monitored in journalistic writing. They are a challenge to avoid in writing; but when an article or report remains bias free the public gets a clear view of a story. A biased story, however, can taint the publics opinion and hide key facts from the reader.

The New York Times was recently attacked for articles it had printed regarding the turmoil in the Mideast. Because of these articles, many subscribers decided to boycott the newspaper. Boycotters argued, The Times creates a false equivalence between the sides in the conflict and gives disproportionate attention to Palestinian suffering. On another story by The Times, pro-Israelis demanded that it was unjust to equally cover the life of a er as well as the life of his or her victim. From this moral perspective, the killer should not receive as much attention as his or her victim. However, The New York Times, responded that it is committed to coverage that presents a fairness and balance in the stories. In order to keep biases out of articles, it is necessary to represent every side of an issue even though one side may appear morally justified. By presenting both sides of the story, the writer gives the reader the opportunity to draw his or her own conclusions.

The article says that, The only thing Yassar Arafat and Arial Sharon have in common is they both think CNN is biased toward the opposite side. This is proof that the article is not biased to one side. Because both the Palestinians and Israelis sight bias, the article must contain both sides of the issue. This also points out that a readers personal beliefs can effect whether or not he or she interprets an article as being biased. For example, if an individual were pro-Isreali, any coverage from the Palestinian point of view would seem biased.

Many times in news media there are editorial biases. For example, the article discusses a picture of a Palestinian and Israeli demonstration. The photo portrayed no difference between the numbers of protesters in each group. There were, however, many more pro-Isreali marchers present than pro-Palestinian marchers. An editor admitted that the picture presentation did not parallel the journalists reporting of the event. Because of editorial decisions, it appeared the New York Times was presenting a biased report. Editors have control of the headlines, pictures and placement of the story in the paper, which can impact how a story is received. For example, if the front page of the paper said that one hundred pro-Palestinians showed up for a march; and in the same issue, but on the back page, printed that a thousand pro-Israelis had shown up for the march, the article would appear biased towards the Palestinians. It must also be considered that the New York Times is a profit making business. In order to keep readers attention The Times will present the more exciting stories first. Even thought this can appear as a bias, it is a necessary profit-making tactic.

This article does not portray bias in journalist conventions. The bias simply stemmed from how the story was edited. The reporter in this case did not necessarily present both sides of the protest march as being equal in number. However, the editors chose to add only a picture to the article that inaccurately portrayed the numbers of marchers present.

Journalists must, nonetheless, be very careful of how they word their articles. An example from the text states that the word retaliation was often used about Israeli attacks on Palestinian targets, which… frames it as a reaction to something, not an action initiated by Israelis. A journalists poor wording selection can raise questions on bias. It is important that a journalist discusses exactly what he or she sees and accurately words the report so as to avoid biased writing.
