Gardner and Lambert divide motivation into two broad categories instrumental and integrative. Instrumental motivation refers to wanting to learn a language because it will be useful for certain instrumental and practical goals (getting a job, passing and exam, fear of failure, etc). Integrative motivation, refers to wanting to learn a language for reasons of understanding, relating to or communicating with the people of the culture who speak it. The level of motivation will have a positive or negative impact on the learner. A highly motivated student is willing to learn and to co-operate with the teacher in the various processes involved in the teaching and learning situation.

The class I watched was devoted to revision of the past tenses, because the students were going to be tested in a fortnight. The minute they found out that they were going to be tested they started to complain. Nevertheless the class began with the checking of some homework which by the way none of the students had done.

Since they hadn’t done the exercise, the teacher proposed them a game. But they didn’t listen to her the kept talking they couldn’t care less about the game, the class or anything at all. So very calmly the teacher told them

“There are two ways of going over the themes for the test; we can play a game or you can study on your own. What’ll you choose?”

“game” some murmured so she explained the game and gave them 10 minutes to play it. To play the game, they got in groups of three but instead of playing it they talked and did nothing. When the time was over, they couldn’t even answer one of the teacher questions.

They began to pay attention and to work when they were given a mop exam because they were all interested in the coming test. However, after thirty minutes when the period was coming to a an end, they just put everything away and got ready to leave. They acted as if the teacher wasn’t there.

I left the class with a feeling of sadness because those children weren’t motivated at all, we can do our best to try and motivate them, we can do everything in our power but sometimes that’s not enough.

I think that we can try to show them all the reasons external and internal for wanting to learn something (in this case a language) such as wanting to obtain work in the target language, planning to use it for travel, the cultural value of learning another language, etc) but we are guides, facilitators and ,in my opinion, there are times when we can’t reach them and have to keep trying.
