Diary Entry Essay

Dear Diary,

Today was a very stressful day. I finally went before the courts with John Proctor to set the record straight, and to stop all these innocent people from being falsely accused of witchcraft. Abagail then turned the tables on me and made me look like the one that was practicing witchcraft. Needless to say I ended up being spineless and confessed to the crime myself. I have so much mental anguish right now it is hard to bare.

John talked me into going before the courts. I was a bit apprehensive. Seeing all the girls in there made me feel very intimidated and scared. I hope as long as I live that I never have to go through something like that again. The only reason I wanted to go and straighten things out is because I thought honesty would be the best policy, but in the end I ended up lying anyway.

While I was giving my testimony that our accusations of witchcraft on fellow town members were false the truth came out that John Proctor and Abagail had an affair. They then questioned Goody Proctor and she denied it. I suppose that she just wanted to protect her husband’s name in Salem. Then out of nowhere Abagail said that she say a giant bird flying amongst the rafters. The other girls followed her lead and before you knew it the girls were accusing me of sending my spirit out to haunt them. I assume they did this because they feared the truth coming out and the punishment that they could face if it was found that they were in fact lying. At this point during the whole ordeal I was so out of sorts that I did something I would come to question later on.

When Abagail and the others accused me all I could do was think, “not me too!” I then went into a sort of like survival mode. I confessed that I had in fact been summoned by the devil and I wanted to be saved. Only half of what I claimed was true. I had never actually been summoned by the devil, however I did want to be saved from the noose. The only way I knew how to accomplish that was to confess. I know that as a Puritan I should not have lied, but it was the only thing that could have possibly saved me.

I hope that I never have a day like this again. I just want this whole ordeal to be over with. I now fear damnation for my sin of lying, but with the strong prayer and guidance of my reverend I hope to over come my sin. Honestly I hope that Salem is soon ridded of the witchcraft epidemic, and that we can all go on with our lives and live happily ever after.

Your wirter,

Mary Warren
