Censorship has been defined as ‘the removal of material that is deemed or judged offensive to any sector of the population.’ Many have wondered, “Just how beneficial is censorship to man, when is it enough and does it help?” It is my view however; that there is no clear answer to that question, for censorship has its fair balance of advantages and disadvantages.

One advantage that most people can agree on is that censorship protects the young, the innocent and the vulnerable. It is built on the premise that we don’t always know what is good for us, we don’t always discern and as a result we don’t always know what should be removed. For example, many movies on television are censored. However, a research study performed by the Concordia University of the United States, found that there are over one thousand images of violence on primetime television per week! People don’t realize the effects of this, it’s desensitizing, there is increased violence and the inability to differentiate reality from fantasy. It pollutes their mind and they eventually emulate what they see. One example that can prove this, is an incident that occurred in the year 16 in England. Two-year-old Jamie Bulger was kidnapped by two ten year olds outside a shopping mall. They dragged him two miles on a train railway and beat and mutilated his head continuously. Upon investigation, they said that they had viewed “Child’s Play II” over one hundred times and were emulating parts of the movie. This shows the influence of television and the need to protect these minds.

However, while this is a valid reason for censorship, I do believe that it goes against freedom of choice. People should be able to choose what they want to view and make their own judgments. When it comes to the young and the innocent, parents should be the primary censors. Which is why I believe that the lack of censorship in “Child’s Play II” should not be considered fully responsible for the unfortunate and gruesome incident that occurred. For me it raises the question, “where were their parents?” For it simply could have been avoided if their parents had not allowed them to view what was obviously not suitable for their age. We choose what we want to see and until we are of age to know what should be viewed and what should not, our parents should accept this role.

Another argument for censorship is that it is necessary to ensure social harmony. Society is made of people from different races, religion and gender and censorship ensures the protection of all rights. Many people, especially artists, can be very unscrupulous. They “bastardize” their art by targeting other groups, sensationalizing certain things. For example, a few years ago, there was a religious group called Thusians, they were printing out tracks against Hindus and were eventually banned. There was also an incident where a local artiste by the name of Sugar Aloes sang about the Prime Minister’s wife. Another example was that of writer Salman Rushdie. He was exiled from England due to a book he put out called ‘Satanic Verses.’ It was a condemnation of Islam and a death threat was put on his head by religious leader Iotolla Comini. This shows that censorship is necessary to protect groups and political matters as some artists cheapen their art form, with their aim being money, fame or some other ulterior motive.

While censorship is needed to ensure social harmony, it also negates freedom of speech. People should be allowed to express themselves and say what they feel or believe without being restricted. However, self-expression doesn’t mean that you can say absolutely anything. For with self-expression comes responsibility and therefore people should ensure they don’t offend anyone.

We have looked at many arguments for and against censorship and I believe people have to decide for themselves, whether censorship is beneficial or not. After viewing the arguments, I personally believe that censorship is a myth. It is widely used as a means of protecting the mind however; it is my view that censorship rarely works efficiently due to the high availability from other sources of what is being censored. For example, a song may be censored or banned due to excess profanity; I can easily get the ‘hard core’ version through several different means. So the effectiveness of censorship is in the eyes of the observer.

Frozen Moments

A picture is a very nice way for people to capture a moment in time. There can be many reasons for snapping a picture. Happiness is one of the most prolific motivations for pictures to be taken. The thing about pictures is they are one dimensional, they do not explain such things as emotion or time.

In this picture we can see that there is two people, a man and a woman. They are standing in a manner in which they seem to be more than plutonic friends. They both have smiles on their faces a mile long. At first glance it seems these people have a tremendous amount of love for each other.

The man is wearing an outfit that today may be seen on any young male walking down the street. His outfit is in the form of tee shirt and jeans. The shirt is baby blue with an urban depiction of a young African male playing basketball. His pants are dark blue. Dark blue like the deepest point of the ocean. One of the pant legs has a cuff and the other does not. Some people may imply that this is a sign that the man is involved in some gang or something, which is not true at all. His shoes look like most popular shoes of today. They have a color scheme of white trimmed in navy blue. From the picture they look like a size ten or eleven. His eyes are looking at the woman he is embracing like a mother looks at a child, or a guy at a new car. We can see he loves this woman. The love he has for this woman can never be captured in one quick snapshot from a camera.

The woman is dressed much more simpler. She has on a dress covered in flowers. The flowers are so abundant some actually overlap each other. Her hair has been done up to perfection. She may have done it herself but more likely she has had a professional handle the appearance of her hair. She has her arms embraced around the guy’s neck with intentions never to let him go. By her embrace you can see she has as much love for him as he does for her.

The problem with pictures is, even though we can see how much these two obviously love each other there is no indication of why, or how long they gave felt this way. When viewing pictures there is no fast forward or rewind button. With pictures we can capture a moment in time. Unfortunately they are frozen moments in time.

How does Shakespeare build tension in Macbeth?

First some background into the Macbeth the play. Macbeth has been described as “A play for the king.” It gained this title because it is quite possible that Shakespeare wrote it for the entertainment of King James the first. It is known that James was highly into witchcraft because he wrote a book about it, there were even rumours that he practised it himself. This play has a strong atmosphere of witchcraft and witches all the way through.

There are other reasons Macbeth was called “A play for the King.” For instance the play was in fact based on the real life accounts of James’s ancestors Banquo and Fleance from who James inherited the throne of Scotland. Shakespeare got the idea from a book by Raphael Holinshed entitled “The history of Scotland.” However Shakespeare bent the facts quite a bit, due to the fact that in real life Banquo helped in the murder of King Duncan. There would obviously be consequences for insinuating that the only reason James was King is that his ancestors broke the sacred law of the divine right of the King. Consequently the only thing in Macbeth that is true to life is that King Duncan was murdered, the rest of the plot and characters have been altered in some way to ether entertain or flatter King James.

The last main reason for Macbeth getting the name “A play for the King.” Was that James the first was in fact the first person on record to have seen it. In August 1606 King James and his brother-in-law, King Christian of Denmark had Macbeth acted for them privately at Hampton Court.

Now we look at how the plot is built and how Shakespeare uses language to tease and excite his audience. Macbeth is a story of a man driven to do evil things and even commit the ultimate crime in his time, regicide. I personally don’t think he is evil, he is highly ambitious and possibly slightly insane (this shows more towards the end of the play.) But he is not evil. The people around him even his wife force him to do evil. Some of them are evil and others so obsessed with power that they have no conscience in the things they do.

The first and probably the most decisive reason for Macbeth’s turn to evil deeds, are the witches. The witches enter the play at the very beginning, it is clear that Shakespeare wants to get them into the story line as effectively as possible and what better way than to put them in the opening scene? James the first would have been thrilled at this point, to have his favourite interest obsession depicted in this play. James would have known instantly what these women are, however any normal person who isn’t intermit with the world of witch craft might not have.

Thankfully Shakespeare has been nice enough to think about other people who might be watching the play than the witchcraft obsessed king and decides to add some little things to get the message of witch craft across. They start talking about a battle. “When the hurly burly’s done, when the battles lost and won.” The audience has not seen any battle in the play yet and they won’t until the next scene. This insinuates that the strange women can tell the future, however, the audience may not necessarily jump to the conclusion that they are witches and therefore Shakespeare adds some words and phrases associated with witches. “ I come gray Malkin” (a grey cat). “ Paddock calls “ (a toad). As the witches leave they all same “fair is foul, and foul is fair hover through the fog and filthy air”.

In scene two, the battle that the witches predicted takes place. We are introduced to King Duncan and his son Malcolm; they are in conversation with a wounded sergeant who is informing them about how the battle is going. “As two spent swimmers, that do cling together and choke their art”. (This means both armies are so tired they are metaphorically holding onto each other to carry on fighting). The merciless Macdonwald worthy to be a rebel, for to that the multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him from western Isles of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied; And fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling, Showd’d like a rebel’s whore” (Macdonwald the rebel is being described as having all the evil things on his side). “But all’s too weak; for brave Macbeth well he deserves that name”. (Shakespeare is portraying Macbeth as a loyal servant of the king someone who at least at this point seems to have no interest in claiming the crown of Scotland). Duncan seems pleased and grateful “O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!” The battle scene it’s self is not relevant to this, suffice it to say Macbeth is given the honour of becoming the new Thane of Cawdor (the old one has betrayed King Duncan by giving information to the other side, he has been sentenced to death). Macbeth however does not know about this and as far has he is concerned he is only the Thane of Glamis.

Now we go into scene three and we are introduced to Macbeth for the first time, he is walking back to camp with Banquo. Shakespeare decides to remind the audience of Macbeth’s connection with the witches, Macbeth speaks for the first time “so foul and fair a day I have not seen”. This line is very similar to the line that all three witches said at the end of scene one. They meet the witches (by now most of the audience will have guessed that these women are indeed witches). All three witches greet Macbeth, the first witch says, “hail Macbeth Thain of Glamis”. The second witch says, “hail Macbeth Thain of Cawdor”. The third witch says, ”hail Macbeth that shalt be King hereafter”. Macbeth is intrigued but takes the witches words with a pinch of salt and leaves them. However, he is visited later by Ross and Angus they inform him of the King’s decision to make him Thane of Cawdor.

This makes Macbeth remember what the witches said. He writes a letter to his wife, and tells her the whole story. Macbeth’s wife is the second evil influence in his life. She immediately jumps to the conclusion that the only way Macbeth will be come King, is if he murders King Duncan. It is not known what Macbeth’s wife really is, Shakespeare does not make it clear at any point in the play. Some people in modern literature have speculated that Macbeth’s wife is herself a witch, it is true that she does use witchcraft later in the play to rid herself of her conscience and call up evil spirits. Others say she is simply highly ambitious and power hungry women, who is mentally stronger that her husband. In any case she persuades Macbeth to kill King Duncan on his imminent visit to their castle.

Duncan’s visit to the castle arrives; Macbeth’s wife goes to the highest tower in the castle and uses some form of witchcraft to rid herself of her conscience. “That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan, under croaks my battlements. Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts! Unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty; make thick my blood, stop up the access and passage to remorse, that no compunctious visitings of nature, shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between Th’effect and it! Come to my woman’s breasts, and take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers. Wherever in your sightless substances you wait on nature’s mischief! Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, to cry, ”Hold, hold!” This long speech is designed to thrill the audience, to make them understand something awful is going to happen soon.

Duncan arrives at the castle they have a huge celebration, which does not end until the third cock. Duncan goes to bed drunk and is asleep quickly. With some persuasion from his wife, Macbeth makes his way to Duncan’s room, on his journey Macbeth has a vision, a dagger floating in the air pointing to Duncan’s room. “Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee I have thee not and yet I see thee still! Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but A dagger or the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain? I see thee yet, in form as palpable As this which now I draw” Macbeth is so upest with what he is about to do he is having hallucinations. Macbeth enters Duncan’s room and kills him with two daggers. He then returns to his wife covered with blood and still holding the daggers. Lady Macbeth instructs to take the knives back to the room but Macbeth is riddled with guilt and will not. Lady Macbeth snatches the daggers from Macbeth and goes herself. When she gets there she decides to create an alibi for herself and her husband, she places the bloody daggers next to Duncan’s drunken attendants and smears his blood on their faces and hands. Lady Macbeth goes back to her husband explains what she has done, they both wash hands in the well and go to bed. In the morning Lenox and Macduff call at Macbeth’s castle for the king. They are greeted by a dirty old porter, answering their knocks at the gate. Although this annoying old man has nothing of real interest to say, he is one of the play’s key sources of audience tension, because they know king Duncan has been murdered and he is delaying Macduff and Lenox finding out. “Knock, knock, knock! Who’s there I’the name of Belzebub? Here’s a farmer that hanged himself on the expectation of plenty. Come in time! Have napkins enow about you; here you’ll sweat for’t” he takes about five minutes to open the gate, the audience willl be on the edge of their seats. When he finally lets them in he keeps them talking for even more time and even asks for a tip! When Duncan is finally found, the attendants are still asleep with the blood on their faces and the daggers by their sides. When they are spotted Macbeth runs forward and kills them with his sword, in a so-called fit of rage. (Really this is just to silence the servants before they have a chance to verbally defend themselves). Duncan’s two sons flee to England as they are also suspected in the murder of their father. With no one else around Macbeth is made King and the witches prophecy has come true.

This is as far as we go as I am only analysing selected sections of the play, but I think this gives you some idea of the language Shakespeare used to captivate his audience throughout the entire play.

Morgan is particularly effective in the way he writes. He can pack an astonishing amount into a compact space, particularly in this poem in the snack bar.

In this poem Morgan is distraught at the condition of the man he discovers in the snack bar. He leads the deformed, blind, old man to the toilet and tries to compare lives to bring out the reality that the elderly man has to live each day. This essay will analyse the old mans life as Morgan describes it and the everyday trauma he has to suffer.

The old man is first discovered my Morgan, when he knocks a cup down

a few heads turn in the crowded evening snack bar; this is cinematic and suggests that nobody is really bothered in helping the old man. I also believe that the old man must cause disturbances quite alot by his clumsiness.

The next line reads an old man is trying to get to his feet. It is the trying we notice here, which is upsetting that he is not suceeding in getting up. It must be very strenuous for him.

slowly he levers himself up. This is a significant line because Morgan is comparing the old man to something mechanical. The actual levering comes across as a slow movement that requires alot of energy.

his hands have no power. This ties in well with the levering. They both have connotations of machines. In this line we get the image of somebody pulling a plug out of a wall and a machine cutting out, and in a way the old man is cutting out as well.

he is up as far as he can get this line is made up of simple one syllable words which are immitating the levering movement.

The significant words in the next line are dismal hump I dont think that the writer is actually describing his hump but the effect it has on the old man. By saying this Morgan is being quite tactless. He is upfront and tells us truthfully of the mans condition, he says what the rest of us would bw thinking if we saw thwe poor man. His hump must make him feel awkward

This is a simple paper to address the current trend to categorize response into trendy terminology that must be explained prior to being understood. While reactive is pretty simple, responding to something that happens to you (or the particular system you are working in), proactive is a little more difficult. As I understand it proactive is often defined as the opposite of reactive. This definition is somehow inadequate, in my mind, as it is itself reactive and not “proactive.” While some people seem to fall into the category I label as “dead,” i.e., non-responsive to any stimuli, I believe it is fair to say that people who respond in any fashion do so by choice or by impulse/habit. Thus another definition for proactive might be to choose your response. This leads us to the gap between stimulus and response that Victor Frankl indicated was an area that could be reduced to habit or impulse. This same gap could also be increased to contemplation, discussion and determined choices. The length of time spent in the decision making process can then be reduced through practice and eventually become a habit itself (but one that was developed because the person wanted to respond to a specific stimuli in a particular way every time). The goal of everyone should be to respond to all stimuli in a “proactive” fashion. Achieving this goal can go along way towards improving the responders self-esteem and empowering (another word that may require additional time to fully understand) them to extend this ability to choose into other areas of their lives.

When you are asked to do a rhetorical analysis of a text, you are being asked to apply your critical reading skills to break down the whole of the text into the sum of its parts. You try to determine what the writer is trying to achieve, and what writing strategies he/she is using to try to achieve it.

I think if you were to ask a elderly person their opinion on divorce they would probably say something like, “ In my day it was unheard of”. In this essay Noel Perrin tells about his divorce, and his theory on what caused it to happen. What Perrin basically says is that some couple don’t last for the simple fact they spend to much time together. The fact that they are seeing too much of that other person is making it that they are getting to comfortable around each other. That causes them to stop doing the things that a normal husband and wife would do for each other. In his essay he gives a situation on how a husband and wife gets divorced. Then he gives an example on their post divorce relationship. He does this to show the reader the difference in how they act when they don’t see each other twenty-four hours a day. Perrin says, “ What they have achieved post-divorce is what their marriage should have been like inn the first place“ (Perrin 40).

I have never been married, but my parents were at one time. Their marriage was not perfect, but it was not horrible either. They ended up separating after about seven years. What I noticed about their marriage is totally different than what Perrin is saying. My parents post divorce relationship was way worse than their actually marriage. It was not the fact that they were around each other too much they just had some problems they could not work out. In Perrin case it might have been that he and his wife were seeing too much of each other but, I think that the person that you marry you should never get tired of being around. When you find your life partner I think it should be someone that you are absolutely sure you can spend the rest of our life with.

My mom was invited to go on a cruise with her friends. I’m going to be home alone for two weeks. My mom told me that one of my brothers would call to check up on me often. She also told me not to tell anyone that I’m home alone. Also if I needed any thing go to the neighbors’ house or call one of my brothers. And that I am allowed into the homework chat room by my self-witch almost never happened. When I went to school the next day I was excited and nerves at the same time. I knew my mom was leaving to catch her flight to Florida for the cruise. I wanted to tell somebody that I was alone but I was told not to, so I couldn’t. That afternoon it was weird when I walked into the house, I picked up the phone like would normally do t call my mom at work but when I started to dial I remembered she wasn’t there. So, I hung up and started my homework.

I just finished my homework for Mr. Sprungers’ language arts class. It was about quarter till four. I decided to start on my algebra homework; I had gotten stuck on an equation and needed help. My neighbor wasn’t home, my brothers’ stink at math, and none of my friends where online or didn’t know how to help. The chat room doesn’t open until seven, so I started on my history. I finished it around five-thirty. My science was next that was the easiest. After all of that it was only six-ten. I started my dinner in the microwave to heat it up, after it was warm I went to eat it in front of the TV I don’t normally eat in the living room. I was still waiting for my brother to call to see if I needed a ride to hockey practice or if he was going to take me. No word yet that was a typical Matthew. It was now seven o’clock so I went on the Internet to see if I could get help with the equation that I was having trouble with earlier.

I was in the chat room and out of nowhere this instant message popped up. The screen name didn’t seem familiar to me. And it wasn’t anybody’s in the chat room. It was kind of scary. The instant message had said, “I haven’t talked to you in a long time.” I had no clue who this person was, so I wrote back “who r u¿” he didn’t respond, so that was kind of scary. Then I blocked him so he couldn’t talk to me anymore. The same instant message popped up again I didn’t under stand it I thought I blocked him. Now it said, “I know you’re alone.” With an instinct I looked out he window to see if I could see anybody on the Internet trying to pull a joke on me but I couldn’t see anybody. I wrote back “no I’m not, my older brother is sitting on the couch watching TV.” He wrote back “liar.” After that I logged off immediately.

I tried to get a hold of one of my brothers but neither one had their cell phones were on, Matthew wasn’t home and I don’t know where Donny is. So I thought to my self “maybe one of them are on their way.” I went outside to get all of my gear out of the garage. It is fifteen minutes before practice stated and it takes at least twenty minutes to get there. I called my neighbor to see if she could take me. She said she would be over in a couple seconds. I loaded my gear in the trunk and got into the front seat. It was now ten o’clock and practice started at nine-fifteen. By the time I got into the locker room it was ten after ten. I’m going to be so dead I thought to my self.

As soon as I got onto the ice my coach gave the being late speech it’s the longest speech he could give anybody. He also told me I have ten extra laps after practice. I didn’t dare argue with him. That was the hardest practice yet it just killed me. When I got home there where no messages on the answering machine that’s not normal for my house. I decided to go on the Internet to talk to my friends and to see if I could get help with that equation. After about fifteen minutes I finally had gotten help. When I was ready to sign off an instant message comes up asking, “how was practice?” it was the same person from earlier. I closed it and it came back up now saying, “I know you’re alone.” After I saw that I logged off. I locked all of the doors and went up stairs to get my blankets then went back down stairs, to the living room. I turned on the TV, set the timer on and tried to fall asleep. It felt weird to sleep in an empty house by my self. I kept waking up every few hours, it felt like someone was watching me it was a gut wrenching feeling.

At school the next day none of my friends were there; just Holly that was really weird. After homeroom I went to Algebra, when I had opened my book to get my homework out but a note flew out onto the floor. When I had read the note I could feel my face go pale. The note had said the same thing as the entire instant messages said, “I know your home alone.” I had no clue how that had gotten into my book unless someone was in the house last night last night. I had gotten this feeling in my stomach the kind of feeling like the gut wrenching feeling, some things wrong I know, but I don’t know what. After first period I went to the office to ask if I could use the phone but I had to explain my situation first (I’m not sure if they believed me or not). I called my neighbor and ask her if she could check on my house to see if theirs something wrong. When she has called back she had said everything was the way I had left it excepted for the computer, she said it had said, “I know you’re alone.” I asked her if she could take me to the police station? She said she would be there in five minutes.

I had told the police my story; they said they would go to my house to see if they could find any type of prints. The only prints they found were from my families’ and mine. They supposed the perpetrator was wearing gloves.

Tina took me back to school, when I got back it was the middle of fourth period, Mr. Spurngers’ language arts class. When I walked in Maria and Jamie where back, I didn’t bother to ask where they where this morning. But they had asked me where I was, but I couldn’t tell them I don’t think they would believe me anyway. During lunch all of the rest of my friends where back too, this is starting to get really weird. It was deftly quite at lunch that day that was very abnormal for us.

When I got off the bus I headed to Tina’s house I had told her I was not going to any practices tonight. After that I sat down at the table and started to do my homework. When I was done it was just in time for Dr. Phil. The episode was all about how to be safe on the Internet; I thought it was strange because of recent events. We ate dinner around nine-thirty, because Tina’s boyfriend had gotten home late. After dinner Tina and I went to take one of the dogs for a walk. While she was walking Baby I notice a shadowy figure walk right into my house. I had showed Tina, and we used my cell phone to call the police. They where there with in two minutes. They went through the front door and found the perpetrator on the computer typing something. The police had bought him outside and had him on the ground handcuffing him. They had put him into the back of the squad car. They had told me that I was not the only teenager that this guy had done it to. They told me that he taps the phones then hunts the people and in some cases he had broken into the houses. He also told me that not all of them are brave enough to come forward.

After all of that half of the neighbors were standing out side staring at me. I told them all to mind their own business and go back inside. My mom was coming back in two days and I couldn’t wait. The next two days felt pretty normal. But everybody in school had found out some how what had happened the night before. And roomers where flying left and right, but that’s how middle school is, you learn how to deal with it. The next day was pretty much like the last, but today my mom was coming home, I couldn’t wait. When I had come home my mom was at Tina’s so I went over there and she had already told her the whole story. My mom was just happy that I wasn’t hurt. I was glade she was home. Later she called my brothers and they were in so much trouble. I was a just glade thing where back to normal for the most part. Or at least what they where like before the cruise. Or were they?

According to the NEW WEBSTER’S DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS of the English Language, a hero is a man of exceptional quality who wins admiration by noble deeds, esp. deeds of courage. The male character of a play, novel, etc. about whom the action turns and in whose fate the readers or audience are sympathetically involved. A man of superhuman powers, regarded as a demigod after his death.

I believe that out of those three the best definition would be the first one. It is the closest definition we have to define the word hero. In my own personal opinion, I think a hero is someone who is self-less, courageous, compassionate, and forgiving. I can say I know heroes but not the kind you might be thinking, the ones I know did not save the world or destroy evil creatures. The heroes I know have loved me all my life and I will love them all my life. You might know heroes just as I do and they might even be people I know. I know that my mom and dad are heroes because they meet my standard of one. My grandparents are heroes to me because they show the characteristics of what I think a hero is.

Close to two years ago the tragic /11 occurred and probably brought forth the most heroes this country had seen in awhile. The firefighters and police officers and all those who worked hard to save lives at ground zero are considered to be heroes by all and I agree. Now, the soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries are the heroes to Americans and maybe to other nations, too.

I believe completely that we need heroes in our lives. If we did not have these people called heroes, we would not have people to set an example for the future of our nation. I think our country might have an excess amount of superheroes such as Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Captain America. There are so many more than just these few, and I am not saying it is a bad thing to have so many super hero figures but I think it distorts children’s idea of a true hero. Granted the kids the read or watch these super heroes are only between 4-1 they should still know who the real heroes are.

When I was watching the History Channel during the summer one night, I saw an episode on comic book heroes and they explained how the writers of the comics used the heroes politically as well as a source of amusement. In the one comic the writers had a super hero beating up Nazis because of the war that was happening at the time. I thought that was very clever and amusing at the same time.

In conclusion, I think society knows who the true heroes are and they know who the comic book heroes are. America’s emphasis on heroes is not over done at all, people know who their heroes are and love them.

In the poem, “Ode to a Nightingale,” written by John Keats, the speaker attempts to use a nightingale as a means of escaping the realities of human life. Throughout the poem Keats gradually discovers the concepts of creative expression and the morality of human life. The speaker is in search of the freedom that the nightingale so elegantly sings about. The nightingale’s song of freedom is an expression of pure joy, which is oblivious to anguish and suffering. It appears in the poem that Keats is tempted into the nightingale’s world of beauty and perfection. He is also longing to sooth his soul from his troubles and open up to a world that promises eternal enjoyment. The answer to the poet’s problems may lie in living a life similar to that of a nightingale’s life. As the poem progresses the speaker explores multiple ways to join the nightingale. However, he eventually realizes that he must face the reality that fleeing from the human world is not possible. Keats not only writes this poem gracefully, but it reads fluently while using a discrete rhyme scheme. Allusions are the main idea of this poem. The poet uses allusions involving alcohol and other drugs as a main idea throughout the poem.

“Ode to a Nightingale” is written in eight ten-line stanzas and is metrically variable. The eighth line of each stanza is written in iambic trimester, while the first seven lines and last two are written in iambic pentameter. Iambic trimester occurs when there are only three accents in a line of poetry. This poem displays a complex form of end rhyme scheme unique to the poem. Each verse of “Ode to a Nightingale” has a rhyme scheme ABABCDECDE. This rhyme scheme is used throughout the entire poem; however, there are a few instances where off-rhymes appear in place of the perfect rhymes. A good example of off-rhyming appears in the second stanza between lines in 16 and 1. Line 16 reads, “Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene,” while line 1 reads, “That I might drink, and leave the world unseen.” I use these two lines as an example of off-rhyming because these two lines show Keats’s notion of writing lines that have a centralized idea involving alcohol. Off-rhyming also appears in the sixth verse, specifically in lines 55 and 58 where the words die and ecstasy are used to end the lines. These two words do not appear to perfectly rhyme with one another. Keats uses these kinds of rhymes to enhance the emotions of the poem.

The first few stanzas of this poem are filled with allusions involving alcohol, drinking, and also drugs. In the first line, Keats says, “My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains.” At the start of an “Ode to a Nightingale,” the speaker seems to be initially in a sort of daze and describes it as a heart ache along with a drowsy numbness pain. The way Keats says this reminds me of the way you feel when you lose someone that you are in love with. I would describe this pain as despair with a lack of self-regard or regard for others. After that in the second line the poet writes, “My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk.” First of all, hemlock is a type of poison made from an herb. Keats compares his daze like feeling to that of person is drugged up on hemlock. This line seems to be a reference to some type of regret towards something. It appears to me that the speaker wishes to forget the bad and perhaps maybe the good of his past in this line. In the second line, Keats uses his first reference to a sedative or drug. The third line of the poem says, “Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains.” The poet compares his current state to that of consuming opium in this line. This alludes to the poet only being half awake, somewhat vulnerable and less in control than normal. In the fourth line of an “Ode to a Nightingale,” Keats writes, “One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk.” The Lethe is a river in Hades where souls about to be reincarnated drank from to forget their pasts. This alludes to the way the poet tries to escape his life by drinking wine in line 11 of the second stanza. Keats feels that the only way for him to live a carefree, pleasant life, just like the “nightingale,” would be to use some sort of drug.

With the start of the second stanza, the poet wants to be rid of his pain from life and instead live in a world of imagination or fantasy. In line 11 Keats writes, “O, for a draught of vintage! That hath been.” Keats calls for a glass of vintage in this line, which is more commonly known as wine. He calls for vintage rather than beer because vintage is more romantic and he wishes to experience the qualities associated with fine wines. It appears that he is not in fact asking for a glass, but instead asking for the warm feeling of being content and relaxed. Keats feels that the liquid he drinks will provide inspiration as well as comfort. Also in the second stanza, Keats says in line 1, “Tasting of Flora and the country green.” The word Flora is used here to represent the taste of the vintage. Flora is the goddess of flowers and fertility. From this I concur that the taste of this vintage would have been a very wonderful tasting drink. Line 14 says, “Dance, and Provencal song, and sunburnt mirth!” Provincial is a region in southern France associated with song, pleasure, and luxury. France is known for their wine and that is why it is used in this poem to display another allusion to drinking. The use of sunburnt mirth is an excellent example of synesthesia. Dance is associated with song, and together they produce pleasure or mirth. The mirth however is sunburnt because country dances are held outdoors. In line 16 Keats says, “Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene.” Hippocrene is the name of a spring sacred to the muses located on Mt. Helicon where poets became inspired after drinking its waters. Each of the nine muses was associated with different arts including epic poetry, sacred song, and dancing. The last two lines of this stanza say, “That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, And with thee fade away into the forest dim.” These two lines (lines 1& 0) give off the impression that the poet experienced something that hurt him traumatically and does not wish to feel it again. To me this appears to be perhaps about a love of his who left or passed on. These emotions may cause a person to not want to endure the good of the future in order to avoid the bad of their past. The second line of these two again show the poet’s desire to get away from something and return to a peaceful state. Thus being in the forest would suit his emotional state well causing him to be very peaceful.

The third stanza seems to be like a suicide note because Keats practically says that he desires to forget the past and does not wish to go on living. At the end of the second stanza the word fade is used and it is again used in the beginning of the third stanza. This appears to be a way of to tie the stanzas together, so that it can move easily into the next thought. Line 1 and begin the third verse and read, “Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forgot, What thou among the leaves hast never known.” At this point, the poet is in deep despair and longs to fade away and forget his troubles. Keats wants to forget the strife of human life and believes that drugs and alcohol are the only answer to this. The poet’s awareness of the real world pulls him back from his fantasy world of drink-joy. Through the first three stanzas in this poem the tone of the speaker is dark and melancholic. I believe that the poem starts like this because in the first three stanzas Keats believes that alcohol and drugs are his only way out. Most alcoholics and drug users seem to be dark, melancholic individuals when not sober.

With the start of the fourth stanza the tone somewhat lightens becoming almost cheerful. Keats begins this stanza with a return to life and a goal on staying focused within his emotions. He has finally realized that alcohol is not the way to reach the nightingale. The first three lines of the fourth stanza (lines 1 ) read, “Away! Away! For I will fly to thee, Not charioted by Bacchus and his pards, But on the viewless wings of Poesy.” In line the poet rejects wine. There is also a reference to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine who was supposed to have been carried by a chariot pulled by leopards in line . Instead of using alcohol to escape, the speaker says he will escape on the invisible wings of Poesy (poetic fantasy) in line . This is where the bulk of the allusions to alcohol and drugs end because Keats now says he does not need either to escape his problems.

In “Ode to a Nightingale”, Keats built the poem around a large amount of strategically placed allusions involving alcohol and drug use. Keats used extreme differences throughout the entirety of the poem. His emotions range from dark to light, but he never touches any melancholy ones. The use of drugs and alcohol in the poem seem to make the poem become funny and ironic at the same time when mixed with lines containing sobering experience. Keats may not have meant that he actually wanted wine or something else, but just wanted the association of feeling high and carefree.
