My First Job


There are many first’s in a person’s life. At the time they could be insignificant or they could stick out in your mind like it was yesterday. The most significant ones usually occur when we are younger, when the simplest thing can mean so much. One of the most important “first’s” in my life was my first job. Most people at the ripe old age of 18 have had jobs for quite some time, but this was my first. Finally I would get my two older brothers off of my back, and would quit hearing the common phrases, “you’re useless and lazy” and “you are so dependant of mom and dad”. This was my motivation; I had no desire for a job, just the constant nagging I heard everyday about not having one.


It was two weeks since school had ended, and I had plans to enjoy my summer to the fullest extent. Having my hand out for money all the time from my parents was starting to get old. I was constantly harped on for not having my own money to spend and for practically sleeping half my day away before I even entertained the thought of getting out of bed. So one day, I woke up at an early eleven o’clock, and applied for a part time job at the Riverside Caf�. It was a little restaurant right on the beach, the perfect spot where I could see all of my friends enjoying their free time in the sun. It was hard applying for a job since I was secretly hoping I would be turned down for the position. I had no previous experience as a waitress, in fact, I had no experience at all. This really scared me, giving up my summer was not an easy thing to do, and I finally realized what all of my friends had gone through.


For the first time in my life, I was taking on full responsibility. It was a milestone; it was something that really scared me and excited me at the same time and I knew that I would remember this day for the rest of my life. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I was ready to learn. I would start bright and early, and since getting out of bed at 70 is no walk in the park for me, I knew that this was the start of something I would come to dread every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning.





So here it was, Monday morning bright and early, as soon as the alarm went off I jumped out of bed, it seemed as if for the first time in my life. My day had begun. As I was getting dressed, I was starting to worry and think about all the things that could potentially go wrong, spill a drink, mess up an order, the possibilities were endless. I showed up fifteen minutes earlier then I had planned for fear of being late on my first day. I was being trained by Barbara. She was young woman in her mid-twenties. Obvious that I was worried about messing up, she made it clear that she didn’t care so long as I didn’t hurt anyone. When I start something new and different, it can seem very intimidating at first. Unless I am familiar with what I am doing, I get very nervous. Nobody likes making mistakes, but when you do make mistakes, we learn, and we learn to perfect what we do.


Every time I looked up at the clock, it seemed as if the second hand was flying by. Before I knew it five o’clock had come and it was time to go home. By the end of the day, I realized what my parents, friends and siblings had been talking about; having a job isn’t just about making money, its about being responsible and having that satisfaction that you aren’t dependent on somebody else. I liked the feeling, but I knew I’d like it even more in two weeks when I wasn’t broke anymore.


So this was the start of my summer, three days a week from nine to five. It turned out not to be so bad, two days of my week and my precious weekend still belonged to me. The money that started to fill up my bank account didn’t seem to influence me, but it really was rewarding. I picked up better social skills, balancing skills, and the art of getting good tip, and I knew it would help me down the line.


So my first day came and went, I started off a little anxious and nervous, but by the end of the day it was a breeze. This step in my life was important to me. It was a big thing for my family too; I was finally starting to grow up and take some responsibility. Even though I knew that it would be expected of me more so in the future, I didn’t really mind. I was becoming an adult, or at least I liked to think of it that way. This first experience was liberating. Even though I quit near the end of my summer to go to college, I look back and think of what a fun time I had. I met new and interesting people, learned some things, and, got paid. Who could ask for more? All in all, it was one of the most important “firsts” in my life. It was significant for me because it symbolized me stepping into the next phase of my life. It was like graduating from something and moving on to something bigger and better. I’m sure that most people would usually write about getting their drivers license, their first date or their first kiss; but I believe my first job really helped change me into a well rounded person, and even though we might initially reject the new and unfamiliar, in the end it will make us a better person for it in the end.
