Two Thousand and Thirty

This was it; he had to make his move… Karl picked up the chess piece and moved it forward one square. Not that chess was the same anymore; they had destroyed what used to be an entertaining game, just like they had destroyed everything else they came into contact with.

Karl stood up from his chair and looked around. He had been locked in the ‘Games Room’, which consisted of a table, a stool and a television with only seven channels (there wasn’t even a computer!), for several hours now. He tipped over the chess game with a look of disdain on his face. Karl then proceeded to do something that was completely forbidden. He clambered on to the table and took a quick look out of the tiny window. He could see that it was dusk, and by the looks of things it was pouring with acid rain again. Karl knew that this meant he was safe from being caught, if he went outside and braved the storm. They never went out in acid rain.

The last few Clones could be seen hurrying to the nearest internet caf. That is where they would usually reside. The Clones had been running Clengland, previously known as England for about seven years. Not only were they in control of Clengland, Clireland, Clales and Clotland, they were also in total control of Cleurope and were soon to be at war with America. It was obvious who would win; America was no match for the Clone Kingdom. The Clones knew things. Karl chuckled, a little insanely, at the thought of America beating the Clones. Oh that would be a happy day!

Karl then did something even more treacherous and illegal than his previous action; he slid a needle out from under the skin on his hand, wincing a little and began to fiddle with the lock on the window. ‘Ah ha’ he exclaimed as the latch sprung open. If there was one thing the Clones weren’t expecting, it was a rebellion. Since they were unable to feel human emotion, they did not understand why the humans, or outsiders as they were sometimes referred to, would want to fight the system. Karl wanted to fight the system, he just wasn’t sure how.

He slithered out of the window with ease as although he was almost thirty-five years of age, Karl was fairly agile and his work with the army had paid off. The acid rain felt like a thousand daggers boring into his eyes, it must have been at least pH4. It wasn’t uncommon, of course, for the rain to become so acidic that it was impossible to bare. Karl had been lucky.

You may not think that a man who was constantly monitored by Clones and had almost no freedom was lucky but compared to some…Karl was considered somewhat superior to the other outsiders. This was due to his extraordinary science and math skills. He was useful to the Clones, so they chose not to destroy him but to enclose him in a surveillance centre. Karl had been in that particular building for about three months but that evening he had finally got his chance to escape and he grabbed it with both hands.

The original Clone was discovered by Karl’s grandfather. He had been a mathematical genius and had previously cloned animals such as sheep and cows. He had finally produced the first human clone in 01. There had been a mixture of feelings in the general public, some were ecstatic because of the leap mankind had made in scientific progress and some were outraged that anybody could want to tamper with such delicate matters but absolutely nobody predicted what would happen.

Karl’s grandfather, after his first success, had proceeded to produce a female clone in the hope that his two creations would be able to reproduce. What he oversaw was that human clones, since they were not actual humans, had a few inhuman qualities. They were able to reproduce at an alarming rate, the female would only carry the unborn baby for a fraction of the time an actual woman is pregnant. The clone population had soared in the two years since their birth and they were then able to overthrow the English government and rulers and take control of the country. Not many people knew how the Clones began, not even the Clones themselves. They of course didn’t care, since all they cared about was power and control. Karl knew and he also knew how the Clones got to people. How they controlled them and this gave him the edge.

He crouched uncomfortably behind a toxic waste disposal can. Karl contemplated his options. He knew that if he phoned someone for help, the Clones could easily be monitoring the conversation, and if they heard that he was plotting against them, they would show no mercy. There was no way he could email a friend, not only would all the Clones be gathered in the internet cafs, but a copy of every email ever sent was saved onto the master database, which any Clone could access if necessary. They would be sure to alert the armies. Karl would be history.

Karl decided there was only one man that could understand and help him. That was his brother, whom he had been very close with up until the very moment the Clones had driven him away. Karl was unsure of the whereabouts of his brother, he couldn’t be certain that Earl (his brother) was still alive but he felt in his heart the presence of Earl, wishing him good luck.

Karl and Earl had always been able to read each others minds, they weren’t telepathic, they couldn’t have conversations with each other through their brains, but they had constantly had that twin connection. That was another thing the Clones couldn’t understand, they couldn’t see the connection so how could it be there? They didn’t have a sense of loyalty or family. They just couldn’t grasp it. Once again Karl smiled to himself, he was beginning to realize that he did not need to fear the Clones, he had to pity them. Pity them, because they didn’t lead fulfilling lives, they would never no what it is to feel love, and passion what it was like to be angry or sad. They were empty inside.

Karl stood up, and stretched his limbs, his joints ached slightly but he put the mild pain to the back of his mind and tried to focus on his task. His main aim was to stay alive, but he could not decide whether to take the journey across the sodden field slowly and stay close to the ground, or to make a run for it. He took a step out into the open; the moons were shining brightly so he was very visible. He sprinted, slipping and sliding on the wet and muddy ground. There was a shout behind him, and then Karl heard the sound of feet coming in his direction. ‘This is it,’ he thought.
