A short story which I have recently read is “A Warm Golden Brown” by Alexander Reid. I believe the short story contains the theme racism.

The story is about a colored girl, called Daisy who wants to be friends with a white boy, called Ben. The story is set in modern Britain. Ben’s mother, Mrs. Preedy is racist, she doesn’t approve of her son playing with Daisy because she is coloured. Daisy asks Ben if she can come over into his garden and play with him. Uneasy Ben lets her come over. When Ben hears his mother inside the house he tries to get Daisy to leave the garden, however Daisy demands “But why won’t she let me play with you? What’s the matter with me?” Ben tells her shamefacedly “It’s because you’re a nigger”. Daisy begins to cry and Ben tries to comfort her by telling her that he doesn’t give a “hoot” what colour she is, that it’s his mum. Mrs. Preedy opens a window and orders Ben to come inside. When Ben enters the house his mother demands, “How many times have I told you to keep away from that nigger family?” When Ben asks her why? His mother reply’s “Because I told you to, that’s quite sufficient reason!” At the end of the story Mrs. Preedy orders her son to bring her a bottle, what she left on top of the medicine chest. When Ben brings her the bottle, she tells him to go into the living room and stay there. When Ben leaves the room, she pours a measured amount of dark fluid on “her pale plump legs” and begins to stroke them “A Warm Golden Brown.”

I believe that the theme of the story is racism. That you are not born racists but taught it by society; that racism is degrading; racism is hurtful; racism is nasty and it can happen anywhere at any time.

The author makes us aware of the theme by using certain techniques. The story is a short story where the focus is on one event. This helps explain the theme because it’s straight forward and the theme doesn’t become too clouded and too hard to understand. It’s short, easy to understand and straight to the point.

When the author is describing Daisy he chooses certain words to colour our opinion of her. He describes her as “A Warm Golden Brown”. This is very effective language because we associate the word warm as something being loving and caring. The word golden we associate with something being precious, the best and very special. So effectively the author makes us feel that Daisy is a kind and loving person.

Mrs. Preedy on the other hand, the author describes as “A plump woman with a colourless complexion”. This is a good word choice because the words “colourless complexion” makes Mrs. Preedy sound like someone with a cold and boring personality. The author also says “She had just stepped out of the bath and was wearing a pale blue quilted wrapper”. Again the author is using cold colours to describe Mrs. Preedy. The word “pale could also suggest that she is a boring person. “One podgy white hand” again the author is emphasising on cold colours. The word “podgy” suggests that she is fat and miserable as apposed to chubby and cheerful. “Her small eyes glinted frostily at the children”. This is an excellent description it really lets us see what Mrs. Preedy is like, a very cold and stearn woman. Using excellent word choice the author has made a very clear picture of Mrs. Preedy.

When I compared Daisy to Mrs. Preedy, using the descriptions the author used in the story, I found they contrasted each other, Daisy a warm and loving girl, Mrs. Preedy a cold and stern woman

When Mrs. Preedy speaks she uses a lot of emotive language such as “nigger family”. This is extremely hurtful and racist towards coloured people. She describes coloured people as “coffee-coloured rubbish”. This is extremely degrading because rubbish is something that smells; something that’s in the way; something you throw out or something that sticks to the sole of your shoe. By what Mrs. Preedy says it makes her a racist and very nasty person. She also calls Daisy “tarbrush”. With all these references to Daisy’s skin that Mrs. Preedy makes, it makes it obvious that the only reason Mrs. Preedy doesn’t like Daisy is because of the colour of her skin. Daisy hasn’t done anything wrong to upset Mrs. Preedy except be coloured.

Another very good technique the author uses to convey the theme is mockery. At the very end of the story we see Mrs. Preedy applying fake tan to her legs. The exact same colour she criticized Daisy for. After all the horrible and nasty things Mrs. Preedy has said about Daisy and coloured people wee see her applying fake tan! This proves that Mrs. Preedy is a complete hypocrite.

The last four words of the story are “A Warm Golden Brown”. The same words are used at the title of the story. The author cleverly uses these words at the title and end of the story deliberately to show that Mrs. Preedy is a racist and hypocrite. Also to show that racism is wrong!

To conclude, the short story “A Warm Golden Brown” by Alexander Reid is about racism proven by all of the above.
