Charles Dickens Compare/Contrast Paper

Like many authors, Charles Dickens drew from his own life’s experiences as a means to produce many tales. These tales included how evil society was, where industries force children into labor, and how injustice the courts were. While Dickens discouraged these new industrial movements, there were several figures that flourished in this new industrial society. And many other figures from different time periods didn’t like the social corruption going on. In this paper, I will compare and contrast Charles Dickens (Industrial age) to Karl Marx (Industrial Age), and Montesquieu (Enlightenment). All three have a strong feeling for what they believe in, which is how society has to change.

Charles Dickens had a strong feeling for many things while growing up in an industrialized nation because he actually lived them. He grew up as a poor child that had to enter the work force at a young age. Dickens was treated differently as a poor child than those children who were wealthy, which led to the belief that everyone should be treated the same. He saw firsthand how bad the conditions were in these working environments, which led to many novels on the suffering of poor kids. His ideas were expressed through these novels as a social reformer.

Karl Marx also had many strong feelings about the new industrialized nation. He agreed with Dickens, that many factories had terrible working conditions. He thought that the worker, rather than landlords, should control these factories. Another idea of Marx was that of a communist society, where everyone was treated equal. Although many think down upon this society, no country follows a true communist society. Both Dickens and Marx believe we were born as equal individuals.

Like Charles Dickens, Mountesquieu grew up with a poor family, and he often criticized the wealthy. His most famous ideas were ones on the government. He believed that the best form of government was one set up by the people, which mirrored the ideas of Dickens and Marx. Also, he thought that in this government, ideas should be spread equally among the separate powers.

These three historical figures did not have exactly the same views and experiences, though. Unlike Dickens, who spread his ideas through novels by using fictional characters, Karl Marx spread his ideas through newspaper articles and works by analyzing real facets of life, without fictional characters. And unlike Dickens, who was born poor, Marx grew up in a wealthy family.

Although Montesquieu believed that the government should be set up equally, he didn’t necessarily believe all people were equal. This could be because of the time period he grew up in, which was the enlightenment that occurred in the 1600’s. He admitted that he thought women were weaker than men were, and they had to obey to the commands of their husband. He also supported the ideas of slavery, which Dickens and Marx would have strongly disagreed with. These ideas are what made Montesquieu quite different from Dickens and Marx, who only had minor differences.

Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, and Montesquieu all made huge impacts on their society, and their ideas are still active in our world today. After Dickens published his many novels, the structure of the work force vastly improved. Child labor laws were put into effect, and the government started monitoring the working conditions in factories. Karl Marx started the idea of communism, which is the preference for many countries today, although many abuse their power. And Montesquieu’s ideas on separation of power became the basis of the United States Constitution. Through fighting for what they believe in, these individuals achieved their goals for society to change, for the better.
