ʑThe Thread That Binds The Bones is written by Nina Kiriki Hoffman in third person. The

protagonist is Tom Renfield, his goal is to reorganize the Hollow and its people. The conflict is

fighting and trying to overpower the hollow people with his special powers. His main rivalry or

the antagonist is Carroll Bolte a member of the Hollow. The setting is early 10s. It takes place

near and in a little town, called Arcadia.

There were two major plot complications. One was when Tom had a battle with Carroll

dealing with possession of a fetch(slave). After this encounter Tom grew smarter and wiser to

Carroll’s tricks. The other was when Fayella Bolte started to cast the “Great Unbinding.” Tom

suffered a great deal, physically and mentally and almost died from fighting Fayella.

Personification was used every time Tom used his power of “Othersight.” An example was when

he was teaching a girl how to fly, “Look now. Do you see waves? There’s a gray one, like a

whale coming up out of the earth. Then another one inside, lavender, rising up like a bubble,

spreading, growing; and others, can you see?” She also used some imagery in the novel. An

example was when Tom opened the door to the basement and was startled by a cat, “A huge

yellow cat yowled, flew out of the basement, and clawed its way up onto Tom’s shoulders. He

stroked the cat. It bit his hand, then began to relax, the stiffened ridge of fur on its back settling,

and its

bottle brush tail beginning to skinny.”

The theme of this novel was “never give up”. Examples of the theme would be when

Tom fought to stop the “Great Unbinding” when no one else tried and when one of the hollow

people tried to take his friend away. Also when he was fighting with Carroll over who owned

Maggie(fetch) , all of these scenes showed Tom refusing to surrender to the darker force.

The climax of the story was when Tom and Carroll were arguing. Carroll came charging

after Tom’s daughter. Tom turned him into a little girl, so he wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone.

The resolution was when Fayella was casting the “Great Unbinding.” This spell was cutting the

thread that bound the bones and would cause everyone in the hollow to lose their power and die.

Tom was determined that he would not let Fayella kill them all, so he counter attacked and won.

He overpowered Fayella and stopped the spell.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was a book that had suspense and bunches of literary

techniques that kept my interest going. Most books I have read only keep my interest halfway

throughout the book because once they reached the climax there’s no little conflicts leading to

the resolution, they become so boring that it is hard to keep reading. With this book it kept those

conflicts flowing keeping my full attention and interest. I would recommend this book to anyone

who’s hobby deals with magic or witchcraft or if your just want a good piece of literature either

way I’m sure you will enjoyed this book as much as I did.
