A culture that I do not know much about is a very difficult one to define in such a short paper. It’s also difficult to find a culture that I know little about. Because of my diverse high school, and the neighborhood that I grew up in, I was shown many different cultures by many different people. If I had to choose a culture that interested me the most I would have to pick the Muslim faith, known as Islam.


The history of Islam is not a long one. The prophet Mohamed founded it in approximately 6 a.d. he passed it on to his followers as he journeyed to Mecca, the holy land of the Muslim faith. Mecca is in what is now present day Saudi Arabia. Mohamed was shunned at first, but then he began to have the faith grow in popularity and spread throughout the world. Because the religion is only 1400 years old, it is one of the newest religions, as well as being one of the biggest, second only to Christianity.


Muslims have cultural values that differ greatly from those of many Americans. Most Muslims are extremely passive people. According to the Koran, the Muslim holy book, fighting and aggression are looked on as mortal sins. This may appear to be contradictions of faith, since we have all of the fighting in the Middle East but I am speaking about a group of Muslims known as traditionalists. Many Muslims have dietary restrictions and can’t eat certain foods. They are also very family oriented, as evidenced by the large number of children that many families have and the fact that you can have as many as four generations living in the same house.

The Muslim faith has many followers throughout the world. Actors, athletes, and political heads are counted as members of this unique faith. Malcolm X, the civil rights leader and orator, was instrumental in recruiting members to the faith and in opening doors to people of color. Because of their beliefs, many people think that Muslims are “weird”. They have a belief that women should be covered from head to toe. As in all faiths, politics and sects are major players in a Muslims’ culture. There are two main factions in the Islamic faith. The groups are the Shiite’ and the Sunni. Conflicts arise between these two factions because one is conservative or traditional, and the other is more liberal. They also conflict with the P.L.O., or Palestinian Liberation Order. That is the group led by Yasser Arafat, and this conflict between them is what causes all of the fighting in Israel.


Political holidays are the next section that is asked about in our text. I have already mentioned the differences in the Sabbath, but holidays in Islam are interesting to say the least. They have a tradition called Ramadan, which is in the th month of the Islamic calendar. During this time, practicing Muslims abstain from eating, drinking smoking, violence and sex from sunrise to sunset for the entire month.


Religion plays a large role in the education of Muslim children. Some Muslims believe that boys and girls should not be educated in the same classroom. These Muslims are generally not found in America, but some of them do live here also they don’t believe that women should be educated beyond high school level. Many Muslim women have gone on to college but they are often ostracized from their faith because of it.


Since the Supreme Court has separated church and state, religion in the classroom takes a back burner. All educators must however be sensitive to all the customs and ways of all children and be respectful of their home lives. Curriculum can get in the way of prayer time for some Muslim children so educators must be sensitive to these needs. Other than that, Religion is not problematic in the classroom, as long as the teacher keeps an open mind.
