First some background into the Macbeth the play. Macbeth has been described as “A play for the king.” It gained this title because it is quite possible that Shakespeare wrote it for the entertainment of King James the first. Now we look at how the plot is built and how Shakespeare uses language to tease and excite his audience. Macbeth is a story of a man driven to do evil things and even commit the ultimate crime in his time, regicide. I personally don’t think he is evil, he is highly ambitious and possibly slightly insane (this shows more towards the end of the play.) But he is not evil. The people around him even his wife force him to do evil. Some of them are evil and others so obsessed with power that they have no conscience in the things they do.
The first and probably the most decisive reason for Macbeth’s turn to evil deeds, are the witches. The witches enter the play at the very beginning, it is clear that Shakespeare wants to get them into the story line as effectively as possible and what better way than to put them in the opening scene? James the first would have been thrilled at this point, to have his favourite interest obsession depicted in this play. James would have known instantly what these women are, however any normal person who isn’t intermit with the world of witch craft might not have.
Thankfully Shakespeare has been nice enough to think about other people who might be watching the play than the witchcraft obsessed king and decides to add some little things to get the message of witch craft across. They start talking about a battle. “When the hurly burly’s done, when the battles lost and won.” The audience has not seen any battle in the play yet and they won’t until the next scene. This insinuates that the strange women can tell the future, however, the audience may not necessarily jump to the conclusion that they are witches and therefore Shakespeare adds some words and phrases associated with witches. “ I come gray Malkin” (a grey cat). “ Paddock calls “ (a toad). As the witches leave they all same “fair is foul, and foul is fair hover through the fog and filthy air”.
In scene two, the battle that the witches predicted takes place. We are introduced to King Duncan and his son Malcolm; they are in conversation with a wounded sergeant who is informing them about how the battle is going. “As two spent swimmers, that do cling together and choke their art”. (This means both armies are so tired they are metaphorically holding onto each other to carry on fighting). The merciless Macdonwald worthy to be a rebel, for to that the multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him � from western Isles of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied; And fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling, Showd’d like a rebel’s whore” (Macdonwald the rebel is being described as having all the evil things on his side). “But all’s too weak; for brave Macbeth � well he deserves that name”. (Shakespeare is portraying Macbeth as a loyal servant of the king � someone who at least at this point seems to have no interest in claiming the crown of Scotland). Duncan seems pleased and grateful “O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!” The battle scene it’s self is not relevant to this, suffice it to say Macbeth is given the honour of becoming the new Thane of Cawdor (the old one has betrayed King Duncan by giving information to the other side, he has been sentenced to death). Macbeth however does not know about this and as far has he is concerned he is only the Thane of Glamis.
Now we go into scene three and we are introduced to Macbeth for the first time, he is walking back to camp with Banquo. Shakespeare decides to remind the audience of Macbeth’s connection with the witches, Macbeth speaks for the first time “so foul and fair a day I have not seen”. This line is very similar to the line that all three witches said at the end of scene one. They meet the witches (by now most of the audience will have guessed that these women are indeed witches). All three witches greet Macbeth, the first witch says, “hail Macbeth Thain of Glamis”. The second witch says, “hail Macbeth Thain of Cawdor”. The third witch says, ”hail Macbeth that shalt be King hereafter”. Macbeth is intrigued but takes the witches words with a pinch of salt and leaves them. However, he is visited later by Ross and Angus they inform him of the King’s decision to make him Thane of Cawdor.
This makes Macbeth remember what the witches said. He writes a letter to his wife, and tells her the whole story. Macbeth’s wife is the second evil influence in his life. She immediately jumps to the conclusion that the only way Macbeth will be come King, is if he murders King Duncan. It is not known what Macbeth’s wife really is, Shakespeare does not make it clear at any point in the play. Some people in modern literature have speculated that Macbeth’s wife is herself a witch, it is true that she does use witchcraft later in the play to rid herself of her conscience and call up evil spirits. Others say she is simply highly ambitious and power hungry women, who is mentally stronger that her husband. In any case she persuades Macbeth to kill King Duncan on his imminent visit to their castle.
Duncan’s visit to the castle arrives; Macbeth’s wife goes to the highest tower in the castle and uses some form of witchcraft to rid herself of her conscience. “That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan, under croaks my battlements. Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts! Unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty; make thick my blood, stop up the access and passage to remorse, that no compunctious visitings of nature, shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between Th’effect and it! Come to my woman’s breasts, and take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers. Wherever in your sightless substances you wait on nature’s mischief! Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, to cry, ”Hold, hold!” This long speech is designed to thrill the audience, to make them understand something awful is going to happen soon.
Duncan arrives at the castle they have a huge celebration, which does not end until the third cock. Duncan goes to bed drunk and is asleep quickly. With some persuasion from his wife, Macbeth makes his way to Duncan’s room, on his journey Macbeth has a vision, a dagger floating in the air pointing to Duncan’s room. “Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee I have thee not and yet I see thee still! Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but A dagger or the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain? I see thee yet, in form as palpable As this which now I draw” Macbeth is so upest with what he is about to do he is having hallucinations. Macbeth enters Duncan’s room and kills him with two daggers. He then returns to his wife covered with blood and still holding the daggers. Lady Macbeth instructs to take the knives back to the room but Macbeth is riddled with guilt and will not. Lady Macbeth snatches the daggers from Macbeth and goes herself. When she gets there she decides to create an alibi for herself and her husband, she places the bloody daggers next to Duncan’s drunken attendants and smears his blood on their faces and hands. Lady Macbeth goes back to her husband explains what she has done, they both wash hands in the well and go to bed. In the morning Lenox and Macduff call at Macbeth’s castle for the king. They are greeted by a dirty old porter, answering their knocks at the gate. Although this annoying old man has nothing of real interest to say, he is one of the play’s key sources of audience tension, because they know king Duncan has been murdered and he is delaying Macduff and Lenox finding out. “Knock, knock, knock! Who’s there I’the name of Belzebub? Here’s a farmer that hanged himself on the expectation of plenty. Come in time! Have napkins enow about you; here you’ll sweat for’t” he takes about five minutes to open the gate, the audience willl be on the edge of their seats. When he finally lets them in he keeps them talking for even more time and even asks for a tip! When Duncan is finally found, the attendants are still asleep with the blood on their faces and the daggers by their sides. When they are spotted Macbeth runs forward and kills them with his sword, in a so-called fit of rage. (Really this is just to silence the servants before they have a chance to verbally defend themselves). Duncan’s two sons flee to England as they are also suspected in the murder of their father. With no one else around Macbeth is made King and the witches prophecy has come true.

slowly he levers himself up. This is a significant line because Morgan is comparing the old man to something mechanical. The actual levering comes across as a slow movement that requires alot of energy.
his hands have no power. This ties in well with the levering. They both have connotations of machines. In this line we get the image of somebody pulling a plug out of a wall and a machine cutting out, and in a way the old man is cutting out as well.
he is up as far as he can get this line is made up of simple one syllable words which are immitating the levering movement.
The significant words in the next line are dismal hump I dont think that the writer is actually describing his hump but the effect it has on the old man. By saying this Morgan is being quite tactless. He is upfront and tells us truthfully of the mans condition, he says what the rest of us would bw thinking if we saw thwe poor man. The talk on AIDS was very informative but the part that got my most attention is when I first found out that the speaker had AIDS. At first I almost wanted not to be in the same room, until I found out that you can live with a normal life even if a person is infected with HIV. I think that I have a lot of respect for the speaker because of the fact that he could stand up in front of strangers and talk about something that is looked down upon in the community. Also when I went home I sat down and watched the MTV special on National Aids Day. I am now much more aware of the effects of the disease and am going to always use protection. I am now also going to get tested just to insure myself that I am clean from everything not just aids.

Every where in life there are opposite forces which cannot exist with out one another. These things, whether opposing actions or opposing thoughts, often in the end cannot exist without one another. For if in the end one prevailed, there would be an unbalance. You cannot have ying without yang or life without death. In Wynnere and Wastoure there is a harmony between the two characters. While this harmony may be unclear to both of the characters, it becomes evident after each volley of arguments that there is no winner in this battle. Wynnere cannot exist without Wastoure.
Wynnere and Wastoure is a book steeped in the social problems of the time. The poem is dated from 15 to 15. The book was written around the end of the black plague and around the same time as the hundred years war. With the death of many Europeans due to the black plague there was shortage of workers and a rise in wages which lead to a decrease in the wealth of the upper class. The rain of Edward the III put England into large amount of debt. He created a large debt for England by constantly borrowing to fund the hundred years war. This constant flow of cash in a circle of borrowing, spending and repaying can be seen much like the relationship between Wynnere and Wastoure. ( Lois Roney pg1076) As a result of the economic troubles of England a need to educate the public in fiscal policy must have been prevalent in England.
In the initial scene a stage is set. A battle between two armies, one of Wynnere and one of Wastoure. The two armies are easily separated by their social status. The army of Winner’s is made up of merchants, lawyers, friars and the pope. The Winners are clearly the emerging wealthy middle class. Both the lawyers and merchants in that period of time

were becoming wealthier and wealthier. The friars and Pope ( the church in general) was also extremely wealthy and had become so only in a short amount of time compared to the age of the nobility in England. The army of Waster can be seen as the nobles. Here we can see that this battle sets the stage for the rest of the book. A battle between Wynnere, the emerging wealthy class, and Wastoure, the old noble class of wealth which is becoming gradually less powerful. ( Gardiner Stillwell pg4)
As the two are called before the King they offer arguments for their side before the battle. With each argument Wynnere and Wastoure counter each others points with valid arguments which make the reader value both sides. ( Nicolas Jacobs 488) Winner’s first attack on Wastoure attacks Wastoure for what he is more then his policies. He admires his own frugality and attacks Waster’s pride. The attack on Waster’s pride can be seen as more of an attack on the pride and ideology of the noble class which was evident in the time period when the book was written between the merchant and noble classes. His argument offers valid points. Waster comes back with reasonable counterpoint. He counters that winner’s winning are of no good to the community if they are not spent. HE tries to make the point that the poor and unfortunate will suffer unless there is a circulation of goods and wealth in the community. He tries to prove that winner’s piling of goods in his house will only collapse the house on himself and his soul ( W & W 5-6). In this initial argument winner is first viewed as a commoner possibly trying to assert himself in the noble world and be levelheaded with his financial situation. The first impression of Waster was of a

noble man who lacks thriftiness and throws away his money. However after their first conversation the reader is left with the impression that Winner is actually more selfish then
Waster and Waster is for the poor. It seems that Waster splits the middle ground more then Winner. He tries to spread the wealth around, while Winner is seen as hoarding the wealth. Winner’s counter to Waster’s argument does not try to exploit if Waster really spends to spread the wealth, but attacks Waster more personally by attacking him morally. He attacks the way in which Waster accumulates debt. He accuses Water of lusting over things like property and defaulting on his loans and legal agreements. Winner on the other hand fails to recognize that because of this he is able to take advantage of these cheap properties and collect more wealth. This is a prime example of how Winner needs Waster. Winner counters Wasters argument that his spending spreads the wealth by trying to point out that Waster’s wastefulness is source of the shortage which causes the poor to be poor.
Waster then tries to validate his extravagance by countering with his generosity. He tries to exonerate his extravagance by giving the excess to the poor and providing work for the poor from the creation of extravagant feasts and clothes. Winner counters by saying that no matter what excess is given to the poor if the food and clothes were not extravagant, there would be much more to go around. Winner provides a valid point by stateing this, but as Winner says this he backs himself into a corner. If money is saved it does nothing but enrich the friars and other merchants. It does not serve the poor any better then extravagant spending. Here again the reader sees a striking similarity between the two extremes, and it becomes even more evident that neither extreme is correct. The only correct solution can

be achieved through meeting in the middle of these two extremes. Neither Winner nor Waster is always correct.
Up to this point both Winner and Waster have proved that neither of the two sides are absolutely correct. Their attacks against each other have raised moral problems with each other’s sides. If one were to follow Winner’s view, the act of hoarding and saving everything could be seen as a lack of appreciation for Gods gifts to men. Waster points this out by saying that if Winner never uses the gifts created by God then he never will appreciate them and will ignore the goodness of God (Nicolas Jacobs 41). Waster’s practice of extravagance is no better. The extravagance can be seen as a waste of Gods gifts to men, when his gifts could be used much more wisely. Winner’s long hearted description of the banquet which Waster throws can be seen as an example of this waste. Winner seems to put all of his rebuttal into the description of the feast. So much so that the feast takes a large amount of lines. He seems to want to really drive home to the reader the extravagance of Waster. While neither is correct, the reading shows even more clearly that you cannot have a Waster without a winner. There needs to be a balance struck between the two ideals.
As the III Fitt begins Waster steps up the attack against Winner. He focuses more on the Winners focus on thrift. He attacks Winner’s defense of thrift as nothing more then a rejection of Gods goodness and his lack of concern for the poor. He gives the example that

Waster states that because the growing season was good the prices will remain low and the crops which he had been saving will be of less value. Winner will then hope for a bad growing season to drive the prices back up. Waster tries to focus the attack on the merchants in Winners army by attacking the way they handle their new found wealth. He tries to emphasize that wealth is the only thing they care about and they care little for the poor. He again is attacking the morality of Winner. As the poem progresses it seems that the poem is less about the financial problems with spending and saving, and more about the moral consequences between spending and saving. Nevertheless the solution still seems to be the same A Waster cannot exist without a Winner. If One exists without the other, not only will there be financial consequences, but moral ones also. Even Waster sees that there cannot be a Winner without a Waster.
Whose wele schal wyn, a wastour mposte he fynde,
For if it greves one gome, it gladdes another. (W&W 0-1)
While he did not have the intention of validating Winner’s point of view along with his own, it provides the reader with more reinforcement. To counter this Winner once again attacks wasters extravagant nature, with his extravagance in women’s clothes. Waster counters this attack by telling Winner that it is his money and he can do whatever he wants with it. Winner in saying this forgets that if it was not for Wasters extravagance in spending, there would be no money for Winner to obtain from sales and save.

Through the past 400 some lines it seems that both Winner and Waster have fairly weak arguments. Nicolas Jacobs suggests that
The argument could go on indefinitely, for the two antagonists
seldom answer each other’s arguments and devote their speeches to recapitulating and expanding points they have already made,
frequently in a thoroughly inconsequential way. (Nicolas Jacobs 44)
In one of Waster’s final attacks accuses Winner of being Slothful and lazy. He accuses of Winner of waiting to make repairs to his house and cursing when the weather is to bad to make repairs to his house. Thus Waster says, Winner will be able to save money by not doing the repairs and have an excuse for not completing those repairs. For if in the end one prevailed, there would be an unbalance. You cannot have ying without yang or life without death. In Wynnere and Wastoure there is a harmony between the two characters. While this harmony may be unclear to both of the characters, it becomes evident after each volley of arguments that there is no winner in this battle. Wynnere cannot exist without Wastoure.
Wynnere and Wastoure is a book steeped in the social problems of the time. The poem is dated from 15 to 15. The book was written around the end of the black plague and around the same time as the hundred years war. With the death of many Europeans due to the black plague there was shortage of workers and a rise in wages which lead to a decrease in the wealth of the upper class. The rain of Edward the III put England into large amount of debt. He created a large debt for England by constantly borrowing to fund the hundred years war. This constant flow of cash in a circle of borrowing, spending and repaying can be seen much like the relationship between Wynnere and Wastoure. ( Lois Roney pg1076) As a result of the economic troubles of England a need to educate the public in fiscal policy must have been prevalent in England.
In the initial scene a stage is set. A battle between two armies, one of Wynnere and one of Wastoure. The two armies are easily separated by their social status. were becoming wealthier and wealthier. The friars and Pope ( the church in general) was also extremely wealthy and had become so only in a short amount of time compared to the age of the nobility in England. The army of Waster can be seen as the nobles. Here we can see that this battle sets the stage for the rest of the book. A battle between Wynnere, the emerging wealthy class, and Wastoure, the old noble class of wealth which is becoming gradually less powerful. ( Gardiner Stillwell pg4)
As the two are called before the King they offer arguments for their side before the battle. With each argument Wynnere and Wastoure counter each others points with valid arguments which make the reader value both sides. ( Nicolas Jacobs 488) Winner’s first attack on Wastoure attacks Wastoure for what he is more then his policies. He admires his own frugality and attacks Waster’s pride. The attack on Waster’s pride can be seen as more of an attack on the pride and ideology of the noble class which was evident in the time period when the book was written between the merchant and noble classes. His argument offers valid points. Waster comes back with reasonable counterpoint. He counters that winner’s winning are of no good to the community if they are not spent. HE tries to make the point that the poor and unfortunate will suffer unless there is a circulation of goods and wealth in the community. He tries to prove that winner’s piling of goods in his house will only collapse the house on himself and his soul ( W & W 5-6). In this initial argument winner is first viewed as a commoner possibly trying to assert himself in the noble world and be levelheaded with his financial situation. noble man who lacks thriftiness and throws away his money. However after their first conversation the reader is left with the impression that Winner is actually more selfish then
Waster and Waster is for the poor. It seems that Waster splits the middle ground more then Winner. He tries to spread the wealth around, while Winner is seen as hoarding the wealth. Winner’s counter to Waster’s argument does not try to exploit if Waster really spends to spread the wealth, but attacks Waster more personally by attacking him morally. He attacks the way in which Waster accumulates debt. He accuses Water of lusting over things like property and defaulting on his loans and legal agreements. Winner on the other hand fails to recognize that because of this he is able to take advantage of these cheap properties and collect more wealth. This is a prime example of how Winner needs Waster. Winner counters Wasters argument that his spending spreads the wealth by trying to point out that Waster’s wastefulness is source of the shortage which causes the poor to be poor.
Waster then tries to validate his extravagance by countering with his generosity. He tries to exonerate his extravagance by giving the excess to the poor and providing work for the poor from the creation of extravagant feasts and clothes. Winner counters by saying that no matter what excess is given to the poor if the food and clothes were not extravagant, there would be much more to go around. Winner provides a valid point by stateing this, but as Winner says this he backs himself into a corner. If money is saved it does nothing but enrich the friars and other merchants. It does not serve the poor any better then extravagant spending. Here again the reader sees a striking similarity between the two extremes, and it becomes even more evident that neither extreme is correct. The only correct solution can

be achieved through meeting in the middle of these two extremes. Neither Winner nor Waster is always correct.
Up to this point both Winner and Waster have proved that neither of the two sides are absolutely correct. Their attacks against each other have raised moral problems with each other’s sides. If one were to follow Winner’s view, the act of hoarding and saving everything could be seen as a lack of appreciation for Gods gifts to men. Waster points this out by saying that if Winner never uses the gifts created by God then he never will appreciate them and will ignore the goodness of God (Nicolas Jacobs 41). Waster’s practice of extravagance is no better. The extravagance can be seen as a waste of Gods gifts to men, when his gifts could be used much more wisely. Winner’s long hearted description of the banquet which Waster throws can be seen as an example of this waste. Winner seems to put all of his rebuttal into the description of the feast. So much so that the feast takes a large amount of lines. He seems to want to really drive home to the reader the extravagance of Waster. While neither is correct, the reading shows even more clearly that you cannot have a Waster without a winner. There needs to be a balance struck between the two ideals.
As the III Fitt begins Waster steps up the attack against Winner. He focuses more on the Winners focus on thrift. He attacks Winner’s defense of thrift as nothing more then a rejection of Gods goodness and his lack of concern for the poor. He gives the example that

Waster states that because the growing season was good the prices will remain low and the crops which he had been saving will be of less value. Winner will then hope for a bad growing season to drive the prices back up. Waster tries to focus the attack on the merchants in Winners army by attacking the way they handle their new found wealth. He tries to emphasize that wealth is the only thing they care about and they care little for the poor. He again is attacking the morality of Winner. As the poem progresses it seems that the poem is less about the financial problems with spending and saving, and more about the moral consequences between spending and saving. Nevertheless the solution still seems to be the same A Waster cannot exist without a Winner. If One exists without the other, not only will there be financial consequences, but moral ones also. Even Waster sees that there cannot be a Winner without a Waster.
Whose wele schal wyn, a wastour mposte he fynde,
For if it greves one gome, it gladdes another. (W&W 0-1)
While he did not have the intention of validating Winner’s point of view along with his own, it provides the reader with more reinforcement. To counter this Winner once again attacks wasters extravagant nature, with his extravagance in women’s clothes. Waster counters this attack by telling Winner that it is his money and he can do whatever he wants with it. Winner in saying this forgets that if it was not for Wasters extravagance in spending, there would be no money for Winner to obtain from sales and save.

As he faded into the distance, a stereotypical male “punk” came my way. His reddish, orange, hair stood up like a threatened porcupine. His Body stood slouched, protected by black leather and metallic spikes, and his tight fitting pants could expose skin with ease, for the plaid design was interrupted by a series of zippers. • Also in 1-two JV’s 51% stake in YHS (Guangzhou) Ltd and 60% stake in a factory to be built in Neihai, Guangxi, both ventures to manufacture and distribute Yeo’s beverages
• May 15- YHS was part of China trade delegation with Prime Minister of Singapore. YHS and OPH sign memorandum of understanding to develop a food processing and distribution park in the inland city of Chendu.
• Also in that year a Joint venture manufacturing project was signed in Guangzhoua and a majority owned joint Venture in Shanghai
Other aspects of YHS focus on the South East Asian region include

Niche global export Market
One of the reasons identified for the failure of Chun Kings was that its products did not have a strong appeal to the average American consumer and that the products may have been considered ‘exotic’.
With the renewed focus on the South East Asia and China markets, YHS is in a strong position to gradually build a stronger export market to western economies as tastes change and demand increases. Whilst this strategy would not deliver Charles Yeo’s vision of a global company, it will provide YHS a first mover advantage as new markets emerge.

Following the Singapore Governments decision to rezone Bukit Timah, the YHS board has realized the significant value of YHS property holdings.
In addition to the land holding in Bukit Timah, YHS has also obtained three substantial parcels of land also in Singapore for the purposes of redevelopment.

YHS has proud a successful history and has emerged as a powerful and highly diversified manufacture of food and beverages. This lack of clear direction has led to some less than intelligent decision about how to expand YHS global diversification. This can be seen in the joint venture farming operation, Flowell Industries. It is clear that shrimp farming is not part of YHS core skills and strengths, and it maybe considered that the board of the time was too hasty in their desire to expand the company to do proper due diligence on the opportunities presented.
The lack of clear vision about YHS direction was further demonstrated on a far more risky endeavor with Chun king. With so many opportunities available to YHS in the SE Asian region, the US expansion plans lacked solid financial foundations.
Despite this, YHS is now in a strong position, with a strong board, highly experienced management led by CEO Alex Chan- and first time has a clearly stated vision and mission.
The expansion of the Yeo’s brand will leave YHS with enormous potential to again focus on truly global ambitions, this time however it will be when the consumer are ready for it.
In the mean time YHS is well positioned to exploit emerging opportunities in China and other new markets across Asia. The company’s core operations of manufacturing and packaging will be supported by a strong sales and distribution arm and the export division will continue to seek out new opportunities in Western markets.
The newly established property division will not only more effectively manage YHS’s substantial holding but will also work to redevelop key investment properties including the original Singapore manufacturing site at Bukit Timah.
With continued focus on brand building, product development and expansion of key emerging markets YHS is well placed to reach its ambitious target of $1 Billion in sales by 000. However this should not be achieved with the sacrifice of core values or long term profitability.
