On the surface, such a statement seems blindly obvious. We are taught as youngsters that “the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer”. For example, if one were to win the lottery and invest all the money (which is rare) in stocks, property, etc., one can almost gain a very decent living without even working!

This, coupled with the fact that with better education and better resources (stock brokers consultants, financial advisors) implies that the rich are able to seek out the education they need and have the time and resources necessary to invest and grow financially. The poor are less likely to benefit from the increase in education (More schools and better programs) and are thus less likely to spend the time and effort in learning how to invest and to consult financial advisors.

Therefore, I do feel that the statement concerning the growing gap between the rich and the poor is true. However, before any further analysis, some variables must be defined

· Firstly, it is important to understand the limitations of this study. The problem is that the level of wealth of a person cannot be totally attributed to his or her income. In fact, very little may be attributed to a person’s income. For example, statistics in the US in 16 reveal that the median income of millionaires is only $11, 000 dollars. And yet, how are they defined as millionaires? The answer lies within the lifestyle path that these rare men and women choose. For example, millionaires, from the same set of data, have been shown to invest 0% of their income, an extraordinary higher number than an average family. Millionaires (or the average millionaire) chooses not to spend their money on the newest cars and the fanciest suits, but rather to be frugal (How do you expect they became a millionaire in the first place?)

· Therefore, it is not correct to assume that a high salary doctor who earns over $600 000 a year is wealthier than a ‘typical’ millionaire in the states who earns only $11 000 a year. Income is but a factor (among many) of one’s level of wealth and should not be used alone to draw conclusions.

· However, because of the limitations of this study, we must confine ourselves to studying only the incomes and assume that it does have a large impact upon determining whether one is rich or not. (Though how much of an impact remains a mystery)

· Secondly, the question refers to the concepts of ‘rich’ and ‘poor’. Because such words are not defined to a particular source of income, we must use our own intuitive definitions to define the divisions. For this study, any income below $0 000 is considered to belong to a poor family or person. Any income above $100 000 is considered to belong to a rich family or person. Any income in between is considered to belong to a middle class family or person. Unless otherwise stated, these figures are in Canadian dollars and the differentiation between family and person will not be made (Unless otherwise stated).

· Thirdly, the statement does not refer to any specific period of time. Was this statement made in the 80s? The 0s? Because of this factor, we will assume that the statement refers to the present moment (Including a few years leading up to the present moment)

Research suggests that almost half of all employees are looking for new jobs, and more than three quarters of them would jump ship at the right opportunity for a better job. The question is what are employers doing to keep their employees happy?

Now more than ever, companies are in competition to attract and retain employees any way possible. To accomplish this, the company must have a constant, dependable showing of loyalty. In the job market today you want to keep good employees in your company and you also want to keep them as productive as possible. Showing loyalty begins with the company’s commitment to common values, development opportunities and quality work relationships. Corporations are beginning to turn to the use of creative benefits to help them retain their valued employees and having these benefits will keep the employees focused on their jobs. While there are no magic formulas to retain your employees and keep them productive, there are some specific approaches, cost effective resources, and very simple things you can do to improve things in your company, such as Concierge Services, Back-up Child Care Services, College Admission Support, Assisted Care for Pets, Make it Fun, Wellness Programs, and Flexibility.

One of the hottest benefits for employers with active professionals is membership in an Internet-based Concierge service. These services give the

employee’s time to focus more on their business. For a small fee, each member of the team can enjoy unlimited arrangements for personal use of dining, entertainment, recreation, accommodations, gifts and convenience services. Your employee will appreciate the extra time that they get to spend with their family and friends. Two of the largest national concierge services are City Access Providers and Circles.

A lot of companies now offer daycare solutions for parents with short term child care concerns. Employer sponsored back up childcare gives parents a private, convenient resource if their regular daycare provider is sick, if school is closed unexpectedly, or if your employee is suddenly called out of town for a last minute meeting. Backup daycare can actually reduce the amount of time that an employee spends out of work to stay home to be with a sick child. Having this benefit will also cut down on the number of parent’s who choose not to return to work after giving birth or adopting. Staff participants are usually charged a fee or co-payment for use of the backup care program. Examples of back-up childcare service are Children First and Bright Horizons Family Solutions.

As a complimentary service for companies that offer child care and elder

care programs, some companies might also offer a college advising service. This service is used where those employees with teenagers who are planning

to go to college can receive help with selecting, applying for and learning how to finance their education. There have been many studies taken that show that more high school students are applying to college than ever before. Richard M. Wald, a national practice leader for Work-Life Consulting says that such services may be a key to improving an employee’s loyalty to a company. It also helps the employers, since they will be helping to reduce the stress and time that a parent has to spend with their child making plans for college. They will also have the employee show up for work and be productive and not have to spend so much time away from work because of college planning. While many companies pay 100% of the cost for this service, the cost is assessed only for employees who use it.

Some companies offer assisted care for pets. When we think about pet care, it does not always seem like a good idea or a service that may get used, but this is one service that we can take a second look at. For employees who have pets and have to travel frequently or they may work long hours, this type of service will definitely be beneficial. What better relief will an

employee have if they know that their pet is being fed, exercised, and cared for while they are away on business and they had to work long hours? They can focus more on their work instead of wondering if they have to return

home to a mess that the pet has made in their house because they had to work late again. This service for pets provides a home away from home and provides play and socialization in a supervised environment. Some services even pick up and drop off pets at your office and homes. You can locate a dog daycare center near you by going to the internet at Day Care 4 Dogs.Org.

Just bringing a little fun to the workplace can also bring tremendous benefits to the company and your employees. A planning board can be selected and they can bring in activities such as summer picnics in the park or at the beach, mini golf contest, outings to comedy clubs and sports activities, and many other activities which will bring everyone together in one place, at one time to enjoy each others company and mainly to get to know each other. The company can pay for such activities through a budget set aside for such activities. The selected committee can also put on bake sales and yard sales to raise the money and also involve the company

employees to participate in these events. Any group outings can be funded by the participants. A good way to keep track of how these events are benefiting or not benefiting the employees is to take a survey. This survey

or feedback will help in future decisions on events, location, and activities.

An employee will definitely be loyal to their employer if the company shows

commitment not only to their job but also to their work-life balance.

In addition to subsidized memberships to health clubs, companies are beginning to offer a host of on-site wellness events including regular massages, free flu shots, round the clock access to a staffed nurse help line and weekly yoga classes. There is an essential link between wellness programs and employee productivity. “Our minds function best in strong, pain free and relaxed bodies.” Having healthy employee’s results in fewer sick days and lower insurance premiums. Many local area gyms and fitness centers offer on site wellness events and programs. One national company that brings wellness activities to work sites is Well Bridge.

In addition to all of these services that have already been mentioned, having flexible work arrangements in the work place can also be a key means to increasing overall productivity, and to building employee loyalty.

A senior consultant firm in Watertown, Mass., offers a variety of services, such as employee commitment audits and work life strategy consulting. They also do lots of surveys, and the number one thing that the people want other than compensation is flexibility. They want their companies to have a variety of work arrangements. As companies grow they need to manage flexibility to become a strategic advantage of a business. Flexible work arrangements vary, depending on the needs of each business.

Among all of these resources and benefits, the common theme is

recognition of the employee’s value to the company and also recognition of their responsibilities and needs outside of the workplace. By selecting and tailoring benefits to your employee population, allowing them to choose the benefits that best suit them as individuals, you may be surprised to discover benefits for your business that actually far outweigh your cost. By helping employees address outside demands, you will reap the rewards of increased focus, time on the job, and even gratitude.

Employee benefits programs are crucial to the recruitment and retention of employees in any industry. Effective programs enable employees to better cope with the demands of home and the workplace. These same policies can also contribute to lower employee turnover rates, retention of

qualified employees, and motivation of workers. When a company takes care of its employees, the gesture is returned in a very big way. It’s nice to know that the company is looking out for you. When the company treats the people well, then you get the people’s loyalty. Once you get their loyalty, then they will do anything for you.

UNEMPLOYMENT

In every society there will always be a number of people who are unemployed. Unemployment is when there are people in our society who desire work but are unable to obtain it because of the fact that there are not enough jobs for everyone. This is bad for the Australian economy because there are lots of fit and healthy people out there who have the ability work but have to stay home and as a result they have to go on the doll.

There are five different types of unemployment seasonal, frictional, hard-core, structural and cyclical.

Seasonal unemployment is when people are unemployed due to the changing of seasons because in some seasons there are certain occupations that have a greater demand for work then others. For example, fruit pickers and sheep Shearer’s can work only at certain times of the year and will spend part of each year unemployed unless they can find work. People affected by seasonal unemployment often work very long hours during their working season to make up for the time that they will be unemployed.

Frictional unemployment is caused bye people changing jobs constantly. A person who is unhappy with his or her job may quit their job in order to find something more suitable. A high quality secretary might leave her job because she is required to do minimal tasks like making coffee or washing plates and cups, or a factory worker may quit because his employer might not give him time off to attend a carpentry course that will improve his skills and qualifications. It will take both people some time to find new satisfactory positions and during this time they will be unemployed.

Hard-core unemployment is when people do not desire work, or who are willing to work but are unable because they are chronically ill, physically disabled or have some serious psychological problems.

Structural unemployment is the result of structural changes in the economy. This means that what the economy produces, and the is caused by the way it produces it, changes over time. The main factor of these changes is because our technology’s advancing, peoples taste in things change or industries change location. An example of structural unemployment is the technological revolution. Computers may have eliminated jobs, but they also opened up new positions for those who had the skills to operate the computers. These people who have lost there job must either obtain new skills and qualifications, or stay unemployed.

Cyclical unemployment is the result of a general depression in the economy resulting from the trade cycle. When companies do not have a high level of production or consumers don’t spend enough money on goods and services this will lead to many people becoming unemployed because there is no need for them in the economy. When companies increase production and consumers increase their purchases, the demand for workers will increase again and unemployment will decrease.

There are many factors that can cause unemployment but one of the biggest factors is lack of private investment. This is caused by private companies not expanding there activities fast or not expanding them fast enough. Another main factor of unemployment is the increase of labour costs. Labour costs are the wages and salaries businesses have to pay there employees. This is a bad thing because if there wages and salaries increase to fast or are already high then businesses won’t be able to afford to pay the employees so they have to fire them. One final cause of unemployment is when there is a depression in the world economy. This is when countries of the world are going bad in there economy and cannot afford to buy as many exports as they would be able to previously. This means that Australia will produce less goods and services and will be forced to dismiss there workers.

There are no positive aspects of unemployment and is really bad for the production of the economy. This means that we are wasting our resources because instead of producing goods and services with them we aren’t doing anything with them. But this isn’t the only effect of unemployment, people’s income will also change and it will cause more poverty. Unemployment also reduces the amount of tax paid to the government which means that the government will be loosing money because since less people are working the government is getting less income tax but with whatever money they get they have to pay all the unemployed people and this is how the government gets into a lot of debt.

Long-term unemployment is when people have been unemployed for 1 months or more. This is a very serious matter because when you have been unemployed for so long you have a high risk of poverty. Long term unemployment also places a strain on the government because they have to support without getting much tax revenue.

Introduction.

It was interesting working on the leadership cases under change in working condition. As it is said “Not every one is born to be a team leader. But most people can learn the skills it takes to become one.” The fun part was the cases brought international culture in the discussion and this group has people from form different culture that made the discussion more interesting. The example from different sectors and couple of country made the discussion points more clear and helped in understanding the concept of culture affecting leadership in organization.

Our points got more clear and as we discussed and shared our thought through the online discussion. Initially we disagreed on case 1 where were we discussed that manipulation of the employees is widely use and if is ethical or unethical. But at the end we came up with the Ethical use of manipulation tends to benefit all parties concerned, but unethical use may enable the manipulator to profiteer at the expense of the interest of the manipulates.

Answering the question of, when does persuasion become manipulation?

Persuasion is the simple straight forward process, where manager states his position, then outline the supporting argument , followed by highly assertive data-base exposition. In other word you are logical, persistence, and personal enthusiasm to get others by good ideas. If the persuader is rough, hard on employee, has his personal interest, and when the persuader is not willing to hear the views of the colleagues and not willing to make changes in response to their needs and concern leads to manipulation. We agreed upon persuasion is ethical but manipulation is not always ethical.

There are many life-changing investments we make which require a great deal of thought and research. One of them is choosing a career path. The first step towards this decision is made when we choose our academic path in university. From then on it is a process of researching options and career paths that will satisfy our needs. I feel these past years in university have been the most influential in my life. Throughout this paper I will try to demonstrate my experiences and my professional development in recent years. After careful review of the theories presented in class, Hollands, Gottfredson and Browns theories are the most accurate in assessing my experiences. it is my belief that through expeience and personal development my decision making criteria in respect to a potential career path has shifted from a Gottfredson type to a Browns Type.(change wording here)

Taking part in the co op program at university, has allowed me experience different fields of work. The experience is excellent in helping one to determine their needs and interests. This can also be classified as a process of elimination. Once a work term is complete the student will have a good feel for that particular field of work and will be able to assess the option to excel in that field or they will be able to eliminate it from their list of options.

Dr.John Hollands theory of vocational choice applies to every student in the co-op process. When I apply to co-op postings my primary objective is to find something which suits my interests. Assumption three from Hollands theory states, individuals search for environments that will allow them to utilze skills, express attitudes and values and take on suitable roles. This is a powerful assumption and one that I feel is very important in determining whether an individual is satisfied with their work placement. Personally, it is first priority for me to find a work placemetn in which I can utilize and add to my skills set. This provides a personal and professional challenge in the work environment. Personal in that I can apply my academic knowledge and professional in that I am given the opportunity to advance my existing skills and add to them. After completing the self-assessment in the career manual my Holland’s code, similar to my SDS code, was ESA. This is fascinating because after looking back to my work placements it is consistent. For instance my first work placement was working with OPSEU pension trust where I worked in the pensioner services department. This position was consistent with the letter S in the hollands code. In this position I dealt with retired pensioners on a daily basis on the phone or in person. It required a lot of skill with working with people, retirees reaquire a lot of attention and patience. IT ws almost a form of counciling. I was excellent in this position and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This first work placement was a very good first step towards a satisfactory career path. ( another aspect of my life which is consisten with this code is that I was a peer mediator throughout high school. )

Gottfredson’s theory of circumscription and compromise is another powerful predictor of how individuals make their career choices. I find this theory outlines my frame of mind in the earlier developmental stages in regards to making a career choice. The theory states that career decisions are a developmental process and that we pick career choices which are consistent with the image we would like to up hold in society. Individuasl will use social criteria such as gender stereotypes and social status of occupations more then interests in making a career choice. However since it is a developmental process, it takes a long period of time to make these decisions.

I find in todays world social status is becoming an increasingly significant factor in making our life choices and career choices. I have been brought up to think about my social status and almost conditioned to strive to better my status as I grow and make my own career choices. I followed this mindset from my first year of university when applying to co-op positions. In this co-op process Gottfredson’s choice strategy applies in that when we are making our decisions to apply to particular jobs we are restricted in the amount we can apply to. Therefore at that time we must stop to consider our options and we create a zone of acceptable alternatives for ourselves.

My image or self-concept has developed gradually over the years. With every co op term I have gained further insight into the areas I would like to focus on and my stereotypes of occupations have increased. For instance my second work placement at the Ministry of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation was not satisfying. It did not coincide with my self-perceptions at the time. Once I started my term I realized that this job would not stimulate and challenge me. It was a step down the latter. Therofre in my next round of applying to jobs, I eliminated government positions from my options. In this time around I was more strict in creating my zone of alternative choices. This stage of my life was critical. My personal interests and values were becoming increasingly important in determining my career path. In reference to Gottfredson stages of circumscription, I feel that age 14 to start the final stage may be to young. I found that I started to engage in eliminating alternatives , determining acceptable alternatives at the university level.

At this point Hollands code can be discussed again in further detail. In this process of my development I (got invov ed with dancing as a hobbie and) started researching into an international work placement. These two new developments in myself are consistent with my code, ESA. The theory states that an Enterprising individual is one with a sense of adventure and impulse. my dream since my second co-op placement was to attain a position with an international company. I was persistent and although it took 1 full year I did finally get a job in London, England with an accounting firm, Hurst Morrison Thomson. Travellilng to another country was the most memorable experience although accounting is not my ideal career path the adventure and the thrill of learning about a differenet lifestyle and culture in another country was unbelievable. It was very educational and proved to be a big step in my self developmetn process personal ly and professional ly.

This is where Browns Value based theory starts to fit into my life. After spending the summer working in England away from home, my personal values have started to shine on my decision making process. One of the assumptions of the theory states that career decisions should not be isolated events, they should be considered together with other life roles. A career is a part of ones life, it should not be something that is there just to gain wealth or increase our social status. Those characteristics are important but I realize now that they should not be the basis for our decision in choosing our career path.

Previous to getting this international work placement, my objective was to attain a position with a top firm in the business world and to make a good salary which would increase my social status and provide me with all the personal needs to satisfy my life outside of work. I’m not sure what it was that changed, maybe I reached a level of maturity in the development process personally or the increase in knowledge about the outside world, but my outlook in the process of choosing a career path as changed drastically. Values now play a very important role in making my decision. I am currently applyin to graduate positons with companies and my values along with my interests play a major role when I create my zone of acceptable alternatives.

Hollands states that one should not ignore the occupations we considering. A career in education is a dream from childhood. I gave up this dream in order to reach for higher goals. As I went through the circumscription process identified by Gottfredson, I started eliminating my options and one that I eliminated was a career in education. Teaching at a high school level or below was something of interest but not an option for me, becuae I did not feel there was enough of a challenge.

One of my most prioritized values is to teach by experience. This value stems from my cultural background. Being raised by east Indian parents is demanding and there are many expectations. In all aspects of my life I attempt to teach others by the experiences of my own life. This has always been a personal goal for me. I did not think I would be able to apply it to a career path because, there was no available option in which my value would be satisfied. A career in education was not stimulating and challenging for m e therefore I eliminated this option out of my alternatives and focused on other lower ranked values and interests. However I understand now that I would not be happy compromising my highest held value. My career will be a part of my daily life and I want it to be a reflection of my highest held value.

In re-evaluating my career goals identifying and priortizing my values has helped me see the end result in a new light. I am now currently considering a career in education at a university level. This is consistent with my values and it will prove to be a challenge.

It is interesting to note that in referring to my SDS code and Hollands code they are both consistent with this career path that I have choosen to embark upon. Under the SDS code many of the occupations listed are to do with a career in education. In reference to Hollands code the areas of education areas listd in each of the samples under EAS are ones in which I would love to pursue further study. Under Enterprising individual, Finance and Economics is listed and that is the major I am pursuing.

In conclusion, I feel that Browns Value based model fits best in my life and my career decision making process. Hollands Thoery of Voc ational choice is very accurate in outlining my areas of interests and it has inspired me to reseach further into specific fields of work. However identifyin my values in a clear and consise fashion has helped me set my short term and long term goals, not only professionally but also academically. My career is not only a part of my life but it is my life.

Marketing Strategy

Target market The target market for the fine foods exhibition will be, chefs, restaurant owners, the whole hospitality industry, suppliers of the cooking appliances eg stoves ovens ect, owners of winerys, house wives, small businesses. All the people that are listed above will most defiantly make an apperance at the exhibition and hopefully make it a success.

· Positioning ; Positioning of the food and wine exhibition is critical. By having the stands placed around the centre correctly you will more than likely sell more products and get you product more recignition. By having the stands just slaped anywhere could cause people to become very uninterested and likely not to come back and even worse not spend any money. I no myself if I walk into an exhibition and it is marketed well, lit up well and just looks appealing im going to stay for a lot longer.

· Place; Having the exhibition at the Melbourne Exhibition centre is a very good start. The exhibition centre has state of the art facilitys for patrons easy access for all, car park under the centre with just a short walk up stairs to the entrance. Along with easy access to people catching public transport with tram stops and train stations close by. But just by having it at the centre more people are more likely to drift in just looking and being curious at what its like.

Advertising; For the exhibition advertising is the difference between success and failure, but by flyers, bill boards, adverts on radio and t.v, news paper having a whole page with bright colours, We want to reach worldwide audience for our exhibition.

We will be operating on a specialty food and drink e-commerce site at www.speciality-foods.com

I. Introduction

1. The Banner of February 00 has a piece by Cornelius Plantinga Jr., called “Judging & Being Judgmental” (pp. 48--50). The article is attached.

. To establish the Scriptural basis for our discussion, I (Jim) will read selected verses from Matt. 7. I will assume that we have all read the first section of the article regarding Plantinga’s reading of Newsweek on AIDS in Africa.

. Below are some discussion questions, based on the article from the Banner. I put a name before each one, hoping you would give a first response, but I’m also hoping we will ALL chime in.

II. Discussion questions

1. Leonard and/or Ella. The section Plantinga calls “Judgments are Necessary (p. 4) says there are things Jesus could not have meant by “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged.” Discussion question What is the first thing that Jesus could not have meant? (See paragraph beginning with “The first thing...” at the bottom of the middle column, p. 4.)

. Bill and/or Jo.Discussion question What is the second thing that Jesus could not have meant? (See paragraph beginning with “There’s something else...” in the middle of the third column, p. 4.)

. Dorothy and/or Henrietta. Plantinga goes on to say “Judgments are Dangerous.” Discussion question What is the big danger of being judgmental? (See paragraph beginning with “I think that Jesus allows us to judge...” at the bottom of the third column, p. 4.)

4. Abe and/or Helen. I know this isn’t a golf question, but what’s the point of telling us about Mike Ditka, former coach of the Chicago Bears (p. 50)? Relate it to what Plantinga calls “a law of the universe.” Is that the same as a biblical law?

5. Ann and/or Irma. Plantinga uses words from Matt. 7 about seeing a speck in your neighbor’s eye when you’ve got a two-by-four in your own (see middle column, middle paragraph and following, p. 50). Discussion Question what is Plantinga’s main point(s) in the conclusion of the article? You may read (aloud) a paragraph or two. Plantinga’s conclusion is very well put.

III. Looking ahead

1. When do we next meet?

. Where? Who does lunch?

E-education

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like E-education even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. They are striving to provide the best ever services to the most desperate students that have already lost the hope for academic success. So many things around us have been changed by development of technology of which education can¡¯t help being an exception. Some kinds of technology have applied to education and one of products is the E-education which makes us be able to get education wherever and whenever we want to. This feature of E-education has given us many advantages. However, there is debate between online education and ordinary education due to some of concern such as technology of E-education and students¡¯ responsibility for learning. Also, some people have asked if E-education can be the way to supplement ordinary education. Even though some problems have been found in E-education, it could be one of best way to get good quality education and supplement ordinary education because technology which supports online education keeps developing and there are a lot of good online course which offer good quality education.

People who have question about E-education argue that online education is not good enough to provide high-quality materials by internet smoothly and it is sometimes hard to connect to internet (Plunkett and Hutchison qtd. in Loftus). For instance, a lot of graphic images and sound effects are needed to educate students effectively in online education; however, many people still use modem which does not provide high-speed internet. As a result, technology of online education might be a problem. The other argument against E-education is if students can complete online education successfully without teachers¡¯ care and attention. Don lake who is board member of the Unite States Distance Learning Association and a director for California¡¯s unified school district points out, ¡°about 0% to 0% of students who try online courses fail to complete them¡± (qtd. in Thomas). In addition, E-education requires students to be independent in their learning, so some of them feel more difficult than ordinary education (Lake qtd in Thomas). These tell us that students could not become accustomed to online education and teachers are needed for students.

It is true that technology of online education might be one of problems, but problems of technology for E-education can be solved and already solved in some parts. For example, even though some people have concern about technology of E-education, that is not problem any more because ADSL and Cable Internet which are technologies for internet have been developing so fast and companies which are using these technologies such as Road Runner and Direct TV have become very popular; the internet service is fast enough to support streaming motion picture and students can even see each other on internet by web-cam now. As a result, students¡¯ learning is not interrupted by cutting internet connection or slow internet service (Rauschkolb and DeRossi qtd. in Loftus). The argument that students could not complete online course successfully is understandable, but there are many students who have done online courses very well without teachers¡¯ attention. Students in E-education can participate in online discussion and communicate with teachers, so they might feel as if they are taking ordinary class. Also, Shea and Boser emphasize, ¡°Arizona State University compared test results of its online M.B.A. students with those enrolled in the traditional program and found that the online students scored higher¡± (64). Even though students need a lot of responsibility for learning, many students have done online courses very well.

The argument of supporters of E-education is that E-education is efficient than ordinary education. With technology, online education has been able to provide efficient education and is not restricted by time and place (Harasim qtd. in Ahern). Since we don¡¯t have to worry about time and place conflict, we can save time and money which are extremely important now. For example, online courses usually don¡¯t require particular text books because it can provide many sorts of visual materials by itself. In fact, text books are very expensive for students, so taking online courses might be more efficient than taking conventional courses. Furthermore, online education gives great opportunity those who can not attend ordinary classes because of physical problems (Goral 1). Consequently, cost-effectiveness of online education could be important reason why we choose online course rather than ordinary courses.

Supporters of online education also argue that online education is as effective as ordinary education or even better. The reason why online education can be effective is that E-education has not only visual effect but also audio effect which makes instruction more effective. Online education has started providing face-to-face interaction which makes interaction between students and teachers more effective by computer communication technology (Harasim qtd. in Ahern). In my case, when I learn something with visual and audio effects, I remember for long time and understand easily than when I use only text. Moreover, online education is more effective when class is large. In large class, interaction between students and teachers is really rare; however, number of students is not problem at all in online education. Thus, it is sure that online education can provide effective instruction to students.

In conclusion, E-education has to be kept going although some people have concern about it. The reason for support of E-education is that there are many good universities and companies that provide high-quality online courses and technology of E-education becomes good enough to support those courses, so students in online course are able to learn effectively as well as students in ordinary class. E-education is one of good way to supplement ordinary education.

Indirect characterization is seen in the princess from The Lady or the Tiger, showing that she is well liked and that she is a serious decision maker. One way that the author uses indirect characterization to show that the princess is well liked is when the author tells us that she was among her father’s most florid fancies. It is also says in the story that she has a “fervent and imperious soul”, making her generally likable. The fact that she though of nothing but her decision day and night until it was time to announce it shows that she takes her problems seriously in finding a solution. This is just barely scratching the surface of how the authors show realism in their characters through the use of indirect characterization.

The author of Before the End of Summer lets the reader know things about Bennie and his grandmother due to indirect characterization. When Bennie stays outside after he learned about his grandmother’s fate, it shows that he is afraid of what will become of her. Bennie’s grandmother is seen as a very strong and emotionally stable figure because of her calmness when she learned of Miss May’s death. The reader can also see her care and love for her family, in that she does not want them to know of her deadly illness, which would cause them to worry and fear. There are still more ways the authors of these stories make their characters more real with help from indirect characterization.

In The Most Dangerous Game, General Zaroff seems cruel and mentally disturbed as a result of indirect characterization. He makes Rainsford very uncomfortable by studying him at the table. Also, throughout their entire conversation Zaroff shows a strong, eerie obsession with hunting. Furthermore, it is made unquestionably clear that he has no regard for human life. The ways that the authors show realism in their characters through the use of indirect characterization is now obvious.

The authors of these stories all try to tell or prove something about the characters in their stories. These stories are some of the best examples of using indirect characterization. In these stories, indirect characterization helps to make the characters much more realistic. This is a key to making stories fun and enjoyable for readers. Perhaps in the future indirect characterization will prove to be even more effective then we already recognize it to be.

Will H.

Coventry Revised

As I crouched down on the cool, dry, cement sidewalk, my flexibility was put to test as I uncomfortably crossed my legs. The smell of wood, and “Nag Champa” incense saturated the air. Each time the door of Passport to Peru was opened, I caught a cool breeze from the wind pushing off of the large wooden door, for I sat only feet from its entrance. I took notice of the orange and white barrels, scattered randomly on the opposite side of the street, announcing the construction Coventry was undergoing. The yellow caution tapes connected each barrel, and warned the consistent flow of pedestrians to stay away. The pedestrians however were not detoured. One man in particular quickly walked, dodging each barrel, as his headphones throbbed to the bass of the music. Another woman dragged her feet along the white gravel as she slowly meandered down the strip. Although it was a weeknight, Coventry was very much alive. As I slowly scanned my surroundings, my eye was drawn to the typical green and white Cleveland Heights police cruiser, parked on a corner, in front of Key bank. The shotgun contained within the car stood silent as a statue in front of the passengers seat, yet the police radio could be heard clearly. The policeman, who I presume was the owner of the car walked purposefully away from me, eyeing each parking meter with a quick yet precise glance, his shoes clanking as he went. As he faded into the distance, a stereotypical male “punk” came my way. His reddish, orange, hair stood up like a threatened porcupine. His Body stood slouched, protected by black leather and metallic spikes, and his tight fitting pants could expose skin with ease, for the plaid design was interrupted by a series of zippers. Coventry has always contained an eclectic group of left-wingers.

The two short stories, “A&P” by John Updike and “Araby” by James Joyce, portray two young men moving on vehicles of desire, uplifting standards, romantic impulses, and failure towards maturity. Each vehicle is natural and suitable because all young people go through trials of love and loss in their lives. Desire sparks each boy to move to the next stage of romantic impulses while being oppressed by religion/community standards and resulting in a failed attempted to win the attention of their love interests. Each vehicle is a trail that results in error in the young men’s lives as was as a cold distinction between their fantasy and reality.

In “Araby,” the narrator is the young character’s older self, pausing back on attempt to help a young lady, Mangan, who is oppressed by her obligations to her faith and is not able to go to the bazaar Araby. The young man’s, whose name is a mystery through out the short story, desires and fantasies tug at his heart and encourage him to talk to her. However Mangan finally spoke to him first, “When she addressed the first words to me I was so confused that I did not know what to answer. She asked me was I going to Araby.” The young man, taking on the role of a hero that he has played with her so many times in his mind, says he will bring her back something if he goes to the bazaar. When he gets to Araby his fantasies crumble because the bazaar is not at all like he romanticized it to be. After a long day of wait he finally has leave to go around p.m. on a Sunday night. He is almost stopped from going by his aunt because Sunday is the day of the Lord. He arrives to find that the bazaar is closing and he is force to pay a full admission fee because of the hour. His dreams of Mangan slowly reappear and take the form of a flirtatious young lady who is rude to him when he approaches her shop. “I lingered before her stall, though I knew my stay was useless, to make my interest in her wares seem the more real.” Realizing that his dreams are and could only be fantasies his mystical bazaar slowly fades to dark and dreary place.

“Araby” is a classic example of Love’s rites of maturity. As the story progresses the young man unwraps his desires for Mangan but at the same time keeps her so close to his heart that he does not really let the reader know who he is talking about. “All my senses seemed to desire to veil themselves and, feeling that I was about to slip from them, I pressed the palms of my hands together until they trembled, murmuring O love! O love! many times.” You can see that the boy’s fantasies are pure and true. He goes as so far as to imply that he is truly in love with this girl. But after attending Araby the young man convinces himself that he only sees this girl as a lustful object and will never have her.

Unlike “Araby,” in John Updike’s short story, “A&P,” a young man named Sammy, who is the checkout boy at the grocery store, lusts after girls in a way common for immature boys. Sammy replaces the young man’s desire in “Araby” with a crude appetite. Sammy is an average boy that gets caught up in his own fantasies when three girls dressed in bathing suites enter the A&P to purchase fancy herring snacks for one girl’s mother. Sammy refers to the prettiest of the three girls as Queenie. “She kind of led them…She didnt look around, not this queen...” Sammy’s lustful desire for Queenie to pay attention to him sparks his romantic impulse to be chivalrous after they get scolded by the manager. He stands up for the girls against authority stating that he is quitting because of the embarrassment Lengel forced on the girls. However, reality hits Sammy when he walks out of the store. The girls are nowhere to be found leaving him alone to fend for himself against the world.

Like “Araby”, Sammy’s failed attempt to see reality shadows him from seeing that he is hurting himself. The both take actions against evil for the ones who can fulfill their request for love. They come in contact with reality when neither girl returns affection. The young man in “Araby” is a bit luckier than Sammy because he realizes earlier that his attempted has failed before it had even begun.

Their rites lead them to maturity with a hard lesson on their shoulders. Even though failure was in store for both boys they still came out alive with only feelings hurt. All boys in one stage of life take on the ceremony of a hero as a rite into manhood. Araby develops anger because he feels that his intentions were rash when it came to Mangan and Sammy doesn’t receive any credit for his actions.

Both boys, using the element, which drove them through trial and error, are now men entering a world colder and more harsh then they romanticized before.

I find Mabel in The New Dress by Virginia Woolf paradoxical. She portrays severe insecurity and a lack of self-esteem while at the same time a healthy and objective sense of self, causing her to try and surpass her limitations.

The fact that Mabels enjoyment in society is directly related to how same society perceives her, points to a lack of confidence. Not secure that the crowd at the party isnt snickering about her dress, Mabel can barely tolerate her short stay and leaves inexcusably early.

As she sits in the corner bemoaning her lack of style and acceptance, Mabel simultaneously addresses her known faults. She consistently compares herself to a fly struggling to climb out of the milk-saucer again pointing to her insignificant image of herself and the imperfection in her character that has to be dealt with.

When leaving the party she reaffirms the steps she will take to strengthen herself thereby becoming a greater social success.

Unfortunately though, the mere knowledge of her fault isnt enough. Mabel, with the best of intentions had already set out to overcome ingrained habit and optimistically fashioned an outdated dress due to a lack of funds. When it came down to it though, she couldnt pull it off, immediately interpreting words, gestures and looks as condemnation, and not posessing the strength or security to thrive in her difference.

Although Mabel posesses the strength that should see her through her fault, namely identifying her problem thereby being able to solve it, her character weakness is all encompassing and isnt likely to be overcome.

Is it healthy? Are you still getting enough vitamins? Is it natural? How can you live on that? These are questions that a vegetarian would get and a meat eater would get from people that don’t think that their diet is the correct one. But, which one is correct?

“Vegetus” means a spiritual and moral approach to life. There are two main types of vegetarians. The first one is just your normal vegetarian who doesn’t eat meat but they do eat dairy products. The other is a Vegan who doesn’t eat meat or dairy products as they believe the animal is being asked to produce more products that it can safely manage, they also believe that the animal is being harmed by being made to produce so much. But both of them believe that God has given them other options rather than meat to fulfil a healthy diet.

When people say that meat eaters are more aggressive than vegetarians, they may have a point. Because when an animal is about to be killed they produce an enzyme that contains aggression. When a human then eats the meat they receive aggression through the enzyme. Also in a recent survey it suggests that aggression levels are higher in meat eaters compared to vegetarians

Further more there has also been evidence to suggest that there is a greater chance of getting cancer if you eat meat. One of the possibilities for this may be the amount of time it stays in your system. In one case a man who hadn’t eaten meat in over 5 years when he had colonic irrigation they still found traces of meat in his intestines! This is because the intestines find it difficult to break down the meat and hard to get rid of it as well.

Even when the animal is growing up it is being mistreated. For example in the chicken farms the chicken has a living space of 1᠐1feet and the only reason it would get out of its pen is to get killed. From this extreme lack of exercise it doesn’t develop a backbone. It dose not even get fed real food, instead it gets drugs and antibiotics so it doesn’t get any diseases but it also doesn’t get any nutrition. This can’t be good for us to eat, drugged up animals that you haven’t a clue what’s in them, how can this be good for the animals either.

When people say that being vegetarian means that you will have almost no fat in your diet they’re wrong. Actually there may be even more fat than in a meat eaters diet. When they say that meat eaters take in too much fat do they think that meat eaters don’t run off most of the fat from the steak or cut off the fat around it? An example of a high fat dish, loved by vegetarians, is the “Brazilian Bake” it has more saturated fat in it than an average piece of meat.

Contrary to many peoples opinions beef today is leaner than 0 years ago, a result of advances in breeding, cattle feed and supermarket preparation methods. Yes, beef contains fat, including saturated fat, and cholesterol. But beef is also a good source of iron, protein, vitamins B, B5, B6 and B1, phosphorus and zinc. Consider that Beef provides percent of your daily needs for zinc, important for a healthy immune system. Three ounces of cooked beef contains 5 grams of protein, about 50 percent of the needs of most women. Three ounces of broiled top sirloin steak contains almost three mg of iron, almost three times as much iron as a three-ounce chicken breast.

Some people say that if you want to have a healthy diet you can’t eat meat, WRONG! If that’s so, then why do world class athletes have large amounts of meat in their diet? If it so unhealthy and full of fat why do world class athletes’ dieticians tell them to eat it? If you say what do they know about food I’ll tell you, dieticians know more about the right food to eat than any one else on the planet.

If you did just eat vegetarian food would you not get bored from eating the same thing over and over? If you ate meat you could eat anything from a good old steak from Ireland to eating a crocodile from S.Africa. What would you eat at Christmas when everybody else is eating a big Turkey? Christmas day is all about the Turkey!

Did you know that they put wax on apples so that they look shiny in the supermarkets? People say that there is a bigger chance of you getting cancer if you eat meat, I wonder if they know what’s in their so called “fresh” apples or pears? Some fruit and vegetables are treated with radiation so they have a longer shelf life and they don’t smell bad when they go off. There is also evidence supporting the claim that the chemicals in radiation can cause cancer.

If we didn’t eat any animals what would we do with all of them? Give them a country so they can have their own government? They would increase in numbers until there would be more animals than humans! I think its good that we don’t let their population get out of control. We have been eating meat for millions of years and we need meat so our bodies can be strong and healthy, why just suddenly stop now?

In conclusion I feel that people should carry on eating meat as we have been for the last few million years. The problem isn’t with the meat today it with the people who eat it. They eat an excessive amount of fatty foods and they do far too little exercise. This is shown by meat being 0% leaner today than in the past 0 years. The number of deaths per year relating to cholesterol problems has risen not fallen. So how can meat be blamed for all of these deaths if the fat levels in it have fallen?

As I am a meat-eater my self I still can’t understand why people would want to stop having beef in their diet totally, it tastes too good! I’m not suggesting that people should eat meat everyday of every week because too much of any thing is bad for you especially meat.

When people talk of the terrible conditions the animals have to endure and the chemicals injected into them, why buy them then? Everybody says how terrible it is yet very few stop eating meat! Where’s the sense in that! The people doing this to the animals are getting away with murder! We should buy free-range beef or beef from your butchers so that you do know what is in the meat that you are eating. We can put the people who are abusing the animals and taking advantage of the chemicals available to farmers today out of business, by not buying their products. Then the honest farmers’ who are losing out at the moment producing good quality meat, will be rewarded for the great honest jobs they carry out 65 days of the year.

Two Saturdays ago I went to Kerry’s Irish Pub with some of my friends. My friend Amber and I went to the bathroom where the usual poems and drawings were scribbled on the walls. As we always do, we read to each other the dribble that was in each of our stalls. Imagine my amazement when Amber began to recite Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” from the first stall. I could not believe that someone had taken such a renowned piece of literature and degraded it to a saying on a bathroom wall. Yet on further inspection of the wall there it was. In close company was another fine poem. “If you sprinkle wile you tinkle please be a sweetie and wipe the seattie.” This event maked me think that Poes “Annabel Lee” is no better than any other childish nonsense you would find on a bathroom wall. To prove my point I will break down and analyze the rhythmical patterns of “Annabel Lee.” I can show that the structure of this poem never formed itself into any set pattern except to mirror a children’s story.

The dominant rhythm of “Annabel Lee” is anapestic trimester shown best in the lines “And this maiden she lived with no other thought/ than to love and be loved by me” and “with a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven/coveted her and me.” However, towards the end of the poem, Poe is using an iambic rhythm within the lines “But our love it was stronger by far than the love/Of those who were older than we/Of many far wiser than we.” It as if the reader is being bombarded with this intense strain of Poe trying to get his point across and then being lulled into a song as to forget that you were

just accosted. This in it of itself makes the poem like a child who just pitched a temper tantrum and now wants his mother to forget it because he wants a piece of candy.

“Annabel Lee” seems to be no more than an obsession with sound. The whole first stanza is a continuous repletion of “M” and “L” sounds

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

The long “A” sound in the first stanza creates a sound suggesting a mournful passage of time. Then, in the first line of the fourth stanza has a repetitive “H” sound “The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,” gives a sarcastic undertone. The repetition of the short “O” sound, in the second and fifth stanzas, gives a calming feeling

I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love-

I and my Annabel Lee-

With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven

Constance

Coveted her and me.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we-

Of many far wiser than we -

And neither the angels in heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

The repetition of the “EA” sound, in the first two lines of the sixth stanza, “For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams/Of the beautiful Annabel Lee,” brings a growing feeling of intensity to the reader. Also, with the repetition of the long “I” sound, in the next four lines of the same stanza, amplifies the whiney nature of the poem

And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee,

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,

“Annabel Lee” shows a great childlike form. Poe even states “I was a child and she was a child,” symbolizing innocence. He is like a boy obsessed with an object. But, in this case the object of his affection is a person. Annabel Lee’s death seems not to affect the relationship that Poe has with her. Its as if her death had not changed they’re interactions with each other. This makes me wonder if Annabel Lee really “lived with no other thought/Than to love and be loved by” Poe. Or is it just something that you

might read from a stalker. Its sounds like a childish obsession that has masked itself behind what someone calls love. He still speaks of Annabel Lee as if she were alive.

denying the loss of anything. So if this love was a love that even “The angels, not half so happy in heaven,/Went envying” them why does Annabel Lee’s death not change Poe’s interactions with Annabel Lee.

I can just see a deranged man scribbling this poem on a bathroom wall so that everyone will read it. This would some how justify the love this person had and make the delusion real. The darkness of the poem shows another side of the story. With the words and phrases “sepulcher,” “tomb,” “angels,” “demons” and winged seraphs” the poem gives the impression that there is an underlying mistrust in what Poe is saying about his love for Annabel Lee.

After looking into what Poe’s critictics said about his work I feel justified in calling “Annabel Lee” a childish work. T.S. Elliot states “that Poe had a Powerful intellect is undeniable but it seems to me the intellect of a highly gifted young person before puberty. The forms which his lively curiosity takes are those in which a pre-adolescent mentality delights (Hoffman, p.x).” This shows that even Poe’s colleagues thought his work lacked the style of a mature educated writer. Also, in the book, Eight American Writers, Norman Foerster says “in Poe’s late style, his language grows more artificial, his rhythm more spasmodic, and his mood close to hysteria. Critics have been disposed to attribute this change to mental deterioration, but it is probably the result of

Poe’s increasing preoccupation with the details of his poetic theory and his journalist’s appeal to the popular taste for the bizarre (p.7)”

“Annabel Lee” even reads like a child’s fairy tale. It begins by saying “It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea.” This isn’t exactly “Once upon a Time” but it’s close enough. This poem lends itself to be seen as a children’s story. I found many webs sites for children’s writing that included this in there pages. One site even had illustrations for children.

With all of the jingliest themes of “Annabel Lee” it makes me wonder if Poe did it deliberately. Maybe to play into what his critics has said about his writing. Or maybe he was letting his writing slip later in life. What ever the reason for this is, I do not know. But the lack of mature writing in “Annabel Lee” leaves me feeling like I have just read a cute little children’s story.

The poem Remembrance and the character Heathcliff from the novel Wuthering Heights have a lot in common. The poem Remembrance deals with a man who has just lost his lover that he has loved since his youth. In the novel Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff loves Catherine since they first met and also has a youth love. As they grow older Catherine leaves to be with Edgar and than dies after giving birth. Heathcliff is saddened by this and becomes depressed. In Remembrance the man loses his lover but does become depressed. Another difference between the two men is that Heathcliff stops eating and kills himself.

Even though the two men have differences, there is also many things alike. They both have loves and relationships that start in their youth. Also when the lovers dies they both miss them much and wish for them to come back. Finally, they are both saddened by the lost of their lovers and do not how to go on living at first. Eventually the man in Remembrance starts to cope with it likewise, Heathcliff commits suicide. That is the only way these two men are different in coping with the death process. Heathcliff lets it eat at his soul and he becomes consumed with all these emotions at once and does not how to deal and does not want to deal with them. The man in the poem feels all the same emotions but he learns to cope with them and carefully go through each one instead of letting them all flood into him at once.

starbucks coffee icecream competitors

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like starbucks coffee icecream competitors even at the eleventh hour. Competition

The primary competition for Starbucks in this new endeavor consists of existing Ice Cream Scoop Shops. The main competitors in this arena are Cold Stone Creamery, Baskin-Robbins, and Ben & Jerry’s.

Cold Stone Creamery

Founded in 188, Cold Stone Creamery offers premium ice cream, yogurt and Italian sorbet with numerous mix-in combinations at over 00 stores in 46 states.

Baskin-Robbins

Founded in 145, Baskin-Robbins offers ice cream cones, sundaes, shakes, and other treats at over 4,500 locations around the globe. Baskin-Robbins serves more than 150 million ice cream cones per year in the United States.

Ben & Jerry’s

Founded in 178, Ben & Jerry’s offers ice cream cones, sundaes, smoothies, and more at 5 locations in the United States.

Other smaller competitors in the Ice Cream Scoop Shop market include independent ice cream and gelato shops.

By entering the ice cream scoop offering market, Starbucks has more competitors than before. Previously, Starbucks competed with Peet’s Coffee and other independent coffee shops in the gourmet coffee market.

Competitive Position

Starbucks is the first company to enter the hybrid market of offering gourmet coffee and ice cream scoops simultaneously. The fact that they will continue to specialize in offering gourmet coffee while adding the service of offering ice cream gives Starbucks a first mover advantage in this new hybrid market.

Ben & Jerry’s offers some coffee flavored frozen drinks and some hot coffee drinks, but their product offering does not compare with the vast coffee drink offering at Starbucks. Also, while traditional scoop shops offer a wide variety of ice cream flavors, Starbucks will focus on offering only Starbucks coffee ice cream flavors. Another factor that differentiates Starbucks from their Scoop Shop competitors is that Starbucks is known for their coffee first and foremost. Offering coffee drinks is Starbucks’ main business. The addition of ice cream scoops will not take away from their existing coffee drink business.

Market Share

Starbucks’ market share in the gourmet coffee drink market is quite substantial. Starbucks’ market share in the ice cream scoop market is rather small. However, Starbucks’ market share in the new hybrid market of gourmet coffee and ice cream scoops is near 100 percent. Of the coffee shops that offer gourmet coffee, Starbucks is the only one that offers ice cream scoops. Of the scoop shops that offer cups of coffee, very few offer gourmet coffee. Those that do offer gourmet coffee have a very limited selection of drinks.

Barriers to Entry

There are logistic barriers to enter the hybrid market of simultaneously offering gourmet coffee and ice cream scoops. The setup costs associated with installing the refrigerated display cases are one barrier. Whereas some coffee shops may not have the necessary capital to invest in refrigerated display cases, Starbucks is financially strong enough to deem these costs negligible. For coffee shops to begin offering ice cream, they must form distribution channels to transport the ice cream to their locations. To transport the ice cream to Starbucks locations, Starbucks may use pre-existing distribution channels that deliver their ice cream to supermarkets.

Other barriers to enter this new hybrid market include the issue of product promotion. The promotion costs associated with a new product may be cumbersome to some smaller coffee shops. Starbucks’ financial strength, brand recognition, and customer community allow for smooth promotion of new product and service offerings.

Future Competitors

Future competitors in this hybrid market may be other coffee shops, such as Peet’s Coffee, starting to offer ice cream scoops at their locations. At the same token, future competitors may include scoop shops starting to offer gourmet coffee.

Starbucks’ brand equity and first mover advantage into this hybrid market provide them with a strong position in this new market.
